Does anyone know anything about these outboards? I've had one on a shelf in my garage for the past few years and want to see if it's worth anything. I believe it's a 5hp, but unknown year. The model is 30401 L5. It ran when I got it, but I couldn't get it started recently and don't know enough about them to mess with it. Any help would would be appreciated!

Zundapp (the 'u' should be an umlaut) was a well respected builder of motorcycles and small engines in Germany prior to WW2 when they provided a mil-spec 4 cycle horizontally opposed twin with a sidecar having a driven wheel to the German Army. Post WW2 they helped put the common man back on wheels with small 2 cycle motorcycles suitable for commuting. Later they produced a very handsome line of Micro-cars as their clientele moved upscale in their commute. IIRC they bought rights to the rotary engine patents and used a rotary in slightly enlarged cars though my skimpy recall thinks they never went to even European 'full size' before dropping auto production.

So----is your engine a rotary or a common 2 cycle engine?

Very nice looking outboard BTW, but I've noticed that the collector community tends to shy away from imports too far out of the ordinary so I wouldn't count on being able to put a kid thru a good university from the proceeds of a sale!

I'm not sure what it is. Can you tell from the pictures? I know you have to pre-mix the oil (50:1), and that's about it.

I've always connected Zundapp with motorcycles, but an outboard?, that's a rare bird you've got there! Good Luck!

sounds like a tecumseh:D

I translated the german caption:

Here it concerns the new Z?ndapp 304 outboard engine from 1970. The successor model with thermostat. The best 5 HP outboard engine which was built at this time. He was revived after 38 years to life. He is actually started with a new fuel pump, fuel hoses and new transmission oil. The engine is new and has survived 38 years super.

With almost everything being painted black it's hard to see details but I see at least one spark plug and wire to what appears to be a single water-cooled cylinder.

If it has sat very long you can nearly bet that something is clogged in the fuel system somewhere between the gas cap vent hole and the induction manifold unless it was scrupulously drained when stored away. If gasohol was last used then the odds of a gummed up carb just skyrocketed.

If it's a standard magneto ignition system---which is unclear from the pics---then cleaning the points and re-setting them is often required on motors that have just sat for long periods.

If it is a water-cooled single cylinder, magneto fired engine then the revival process varies only in detail from any similar outboard and shouldn't be too difficult. If it has no spark and some form of an electronic ignition system then all bets---and conventional wisdom---are off!

Very good translation, slightly more colloquial would be 'gear oil' in lieu of transmission oil. There's a photo of a Z?ndapp in an article about the shop for the July 2010 Antique Outboarder about a former Johnson dealer near Schweinfurt.

I would advertise the motor for sale on the AOMCI website

It's not for sale :D I did get it running and I am keeping it. I am an AOMCI member. Thanks for the lead. I will have to look at my July magazine.

Found it in the AO magazine. Now my question is how did you get color pictures?
