Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Hi, MY and 18rabbit.

Nope. The nearest cable service is about 25 miles away.

DSL is not currently available here either. Sprint keeps telling us that it will be "soon". They have been saying that for 2 years. :(

I still think that DirecWay is too expensive for me. I got DirectTV a few years back when they had a free rx and installation in return for a 4 year commitment.

One of the reasons I hesitate on the DirecWay is that Murphy's law will make DSL available a month after I hook up.

There are downsides to living where I do, but the upsides are too great to consider giving them up.

I am currently leaning toward a hi-speed dial up, like juno. I will continue investigating them.

Thanks for all your input, guys. It has been really helpful. :)

If this problem just seems to have started or has seemed like it is getting worse, you might check to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your modem. I had symptoms a little while ago with my dial up having pauses and not being able to connect. I took a look at the site the HP site, my PC is an HP, and found an upgrade for the internal modem. I applied it and it fixed the problem right up.. Sometimes the vendors upgrade the firmware on there modems or even the modems themselves, which can then cause you problems if you are not using the same version of the specification.

Just a thought you might want to check into..

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

When I was living in town I always had 56K, since I moved out here (only a few miles, but across the river) I am lucky to get 28k. I have the high-speed dial-up now, and it has helped, but it compresses files to speed things up, so pics can look a bit grainy. Direcway is too expensive, and I can't get the Verizon dsl, so I am just waiting. No cable out here either. I don't really do a lot on the internet, but it would be nice to have a little more speed for when I am on it. I don't even bother trying to download video or other large files, I would be there all day.

JB, I'm with rogerwa on this one. If you're lucky enough to have a Lucent (now Agere) brand modem, there are firmware upgrades available. A simple download can do wonders for an older modem with older drivers. Snoot around in Start,Settings,Control Panel,System,Device Manager,Hardware and look at Modems. See if you can I.D. the brand name and we can go from there. You can goto the web site for the maunfacturer of your computer and see if they list any firmware updates for your modem too. Either way, it surely can't hurt upgrading the drivers and/or firmware.

My modem is a has the lucent Kflex56 chipset while the industry has settled on the v.90 stnadard. X2 was the other major variant and the two were not compatible. The upgrades help to keep me communicating with the v.90 modem banks the ISPs have.

I beleive there are firmware updates for both X2 and Kflex56. Its been a while since I have looked into this but I don't think I am too far off.

JB

I have been using www.ev1.net for 2 years, and it is a good dialup. I have never been cutoff, or had any problems. Connect is always 44K at my house, higher at other locations.

10.50 per month and that includes high speed (I dont use it though, I have an old computer that didnt work too well with it).

Ken

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

I can attest that ev1.net is a good ISP and I also used it over a two year period at home and at the office. At home miles from the switching station my best connect speed was 28, at the office closer to the switching station I connect at 50.6 using the web jet that comes with it.

We finally had to switch to roadrunner at home. The cable guy told me that no matter what ISP we switched to as long as we were on dial up we were too far from the switching station to dial up any faster.

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Yippeeeeeeee...good news for me anyway.

Ahoy JB. I've been stuck in dial up he77 for 7+ years now. Connection speeds slowly degrading a residential development grew. Filed complaints with Public Service Commision, Verizon Communications North, Town Board. Too Bad, So Sad was the feedback I typicaly received.

Well, well,.......now due to technology I have a local ISP that offers Canopy Wireless. Always on connections at or above 1Mbps. Both upload and download. $40 +tax per month.

It took me six weeks or so of treasure hunting to learn of this wireless technology AND that a local provider is in my area. Deal is the isp mounts their equipment on a cell tower. The customer must be in line of sight of tower..out to 4 mile fringe...to receive signal.

For me, I am at the 4 mile fringe, thus I need a parabolic dish for signal integrity.

Long and short..I invest a couple hundred bucks in equipment, sign a on eyear contract, good to go.

Within a month when weather improves some I will be on roof mounting hardware...then screaming speed nut on the net.

Perhaps wireless is an option for some here??

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Ahoy all and welcome me to the world of high speed!!!

Now have my Motorola Canopy wireless 'net connection up and functioning.

879kbps now, must climb up on roof to fine tune subscriber module aiming. Should get more speed after the tuneup.

This sure beats the 35kbps I had with dial up.

Next is the change email account nightmare, paypal, ebay, friends, relatives, etc.

yippeeeeeeeeee :D :D :D

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

I hear a cable link is the way to go. one of my friends has it with his comcast line and he says its really good. he pays about 40 a month. if you dont like it then just quit the thing. i dont think there was any start up money for the thing. i myself use a phone line and my isp sucks, but i'm not the type to care about it myself

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Hey JB:

Remember all the horror stories I mentioned about DirecWay?

I can tell ya for hours what that POS service did to me. DirecWay is the most WORTHLESS service... Next to AOL anyway... :D

You're better off with 56K dial-up. At least it's more stable, and a heck of a lot cheaper.
When I was having trouble with DirecWay, I'd switch to a friends dial-up account, and it would outrun DirecWay almost every-time.
The ONLY advantage I had with Direcway is large file downloads. When the service worked, it worked fast. But that didn't happen very often.

If I can find all my tips and tweaks for that service, I'll toss them your way.
Do you have Dr. TCP? It will help you optimize some settings for DirecWay. That's a good place to start.

Actually... A good place to start is toss that DirecWay in the trash. Save yourself the trouble NOW!

I put my entire system on EBay and recovered a little of my losses. I never recovered the years off my life due to the high blood-pressure caused by yelling at the computer screen cause I can't surf anywhere, or DirecWay keeps telling me to unplug the modems, or I've been 'elevated' to the next tier for service...

H.
