GPS for my truck. End of chapter 1.

For several years I have been using a Garmin GPSMAP unit in my vehicles. They give me the same comfort when traveling that they do when on the boat on a big, complex lake. They also prevent me getting lost and guide me, after a fashion, to where I intend to go

First I used a GPS12map, then went to the Garmin 162.

They work great at night, but are very hard to read in daylight in the truck. Monochrome LCD screens.

Well, I am going to sell my boat and the buyer is sure to want the Garmin 162, so I am looking around for a good color screen unit to replace it in my truck.

I saw some in-dash units (Pioneer AVID N1) that fold the screen down and zip it out of sight when not in use. Really cool. . .big, 7" wide screens, play DVDs or CDs, radios, etc. BUT:

I really like the Bose sound system that MB put in my truck. I don't want to replace it with a multimedia unit. I only want to add a good GPS.

I don't know if I would ever use the voice command direction that most of the made-for-a-car units have. I wouldn't mind the option, but I travel with spontaniety and those units go crazy if you decide to take an interesting side road that is not on their planned route.

My priorities are:
Fairly large (5" or so) high res color screen.
Quality, updatable cartography that covers the entire USA.
Intuitive operation for a guy who has been runnning Garmins for years.

So far I have a list, not in any particular order, of some units I might like:

Garmin 276C with auto navigation kit. About $1K MSRP. Can be used in a vehicle, with auto navigation software, or in a traditional boat application with any Mapsource SW.

Garmin 182C. About $1.2K MSRP with accessories. Adapt it the way I adapted my 162.

Garmin iQue 3600 GPS/PDA with auto nav kit, same features as the 276C plus PDA features. Around $600 MSRP with accessories.

Garmin 172C. Pretty much the same as my 162, but color screen, much more RAM, takes memory cards. About a Grand.

Garmin GPS 18. Converts a laptop to a powerful GPS. Less than $180 MSRP. Sounds great, but what laptop or notebook is amall enough to mount on my dash and power from 12volts?

Your experiences and ideas would be welcome.

Thanks :)

JB, I almost fell over when I saw the price for the Garmin 18!
Have a look at this: BU-303 GPS

I bought one of these last year and it works a treat. Personally , I would go for a small laptop with one of these units. Mapping programs offer many options you mention and you have a laptop for other uses as well. I've used Mappoint 2002 and 2004 with no problems.

Interesting product,X. Looks great.

I think I would still prefer the Garmin GPS 18, because it includes mounting options and full complement of software. Plus, we old guys develop strong Brand loyalty when we have had a series of winners.

Thanks for the input. :)

Probably settle for guides from now on, Flashback.

Getting old. Had three heart attacks and cancer. Sunshine III is just too much for me to handle alone and I can't justify keeping her just to go with my son once a year. My Doc has been after me to quit for several years. :(

She is going to a young feller who will keep her where she belongs. . . on the water.

Well i guess every sailor comes home from the sea eventually, and you have a nice front porch and a good sea faring book, so maybe it's not all bad..hang in there and God Bless....... :D

very sorry to hear that you have to give up the boat,i hope that you can find someone in your neck of the woods that needs a shipmate and likes to fish.

Well, I bought an Astrotek PL 532 off eBay for about $300 less than MSRP.

Looks good. Bright 5" screen with alternate background for night driving so it doesn't blind you. Takes Compact Flash cards up to 1GB so it can carry the whole continent. Sits on the dash top but small enough not to block any of your view.

Doesn't have the ability for direct download from the 'puter. Gotta buy a CF reader/programmer to program/reprogram the 256MB card that came with it.

Just installed it in Ole Blue. I will report performance.

JB,

Is there a web site where I can look at the Astrotek PL 532? If there is, it's well hidden!

Thanks, tcube

Re: GPS for my truck. End of chapter 1.

Yup. Just got back.

For the moment I am definitely not happy with the unit.

It has gotten confused and locked up a couple of times. Had to unplug it (no ON-OFF switch) to get it to reboot and go back to work.

But, worst of all (@#$%^&), just as I left for LOTW I got a "FATAL ERROR" message that the .exe program had committed an illegal operation and would be shut down. It hasn't worked a minute since.

Now that I am home I will try reprogramming the Flash Card. If that doesn't do it I will try to return it for refund and get a Garmin. They work.

:(  :(

Re: GPS for my truck. End of chapter 1.

I wouldn’t overlook Magellan’s Roadmate series. The 700 is a bit pricy but nothing compares with it, yet. Doesn’t have a 5” screen but then you may not need one after seeing Magellan graphics. Touch screen, usb, 10gb internal hard drive has maps/info for the whole 48 states preloaded. I think Costco might be selling the 700 ... about $950. Application specific…cannot be used on a boat…except maybe a VW Thing when out of the water.

Magellan was bought out a couple years ago by the Thales Group. I think they had $10-billion in sales last year. Magellan products are being redesigned. Haven’t seen a lot of reviews for the new stuff but from I have seen the new Magellan products have no worries in a head-to-head comparison with any Garmin products. Thales wants Magellan back in the gps leadership position it had in the 80’s and they are investing the resources to make it happen.

If it’s technology, cnet.com eventually gets around to reviewing. From cnet’s review:

“We thought Garmin's StreetPilot III was the best vehicle-navigation system, but Magellan's RoadMate 700 has raised the bar.”

Re: GPS for my truck. End of chapter 1.

Did a little troubleshooting.

It was my fault :(

Unit calls for 1GB or less card, I put a 2GB card in it and it was dropping bits.

Reprogrammed the 256MB card, put it in and it is working as advertised.

Gonna try to swap the 2GB card for a couple of 512MB cards.

Further reports to come.

Re: GPS for my truck. End of chapter 1.

Thanks JB...I hate not having e-mail notification on my threads here.

18rabitt that sounds encouraging but it will take a lot more then that to get market share back. Magellen has made a poor product for a long time, it does sound like they are getting better though.

The unit is now in transit for replacement under warranty.

Croaked again.

The serial number may have given me a clue: 000013. :(
