Okay, I got soft hearted when the weather got cold this past winter and let the dog sleep in the house instead of his comfy heated bed in the garage. He's 13 and I thought he needed to be inside.

Anyway, all was fine until I put him back outdoors, now we have fleas.

I set off foggers (6) about 2 weeks ago

and for a while they seemed to be gone then all of a sudden they came back with a vengence. So yesterday I set off 6 more Hot Shot Foggers. This morning I found another flea.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the fogger? I know I put enough out for the area to be fogged. Do some foggers only kill adult fleas?

I'm at a loss here and its very frustrating. I hate the little buggers.

Do I need to take more drastic measures?

you're killing some of the adult fleas only, you need to kill off the eggs or else the little buggers would keep on laying and hatching,it's a vicious circle, if you have carpeted floors you may want to try shampooing it, i think that there are some types of shampoos containing certain chemicals that will do the job.

You're going to have to do a few foggings, but how about some other treatment first. That stuff you put on the dog's (or cat's) neck on the skin, which interrupts the reproductive cycle of the fleas, is terrific and rather permanent if maintained. Go with a monthly dosage of it, combined with a monthly fogging, and you should be all clear in about 2 months.

If I remember right you kill the live ones then come back 2 weeks later anc catch the hatched eggs, and again until they don't come back. A flea bath for the dog once in a while don't hurt either...Chief ;)

He does need a dip again, but its been too cold and I've been worried about him getting sick. He will get one this weekend though. We get a lot of sand fleas here.

Thanks a bunch for your comments so far. :)

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

If you're interested in breaking the flea cycle (including the dogs space in the garage), in addition to fogging pick up some Top Spot Plus for your dog. It's an oily liquid you apply to a small spot of your dogs skin. Absorbed through the skin and kills fleas on the dog as well as ticks. An application works for 2-3 months for fleas and about a month for ticks. Plus, it prevents flea eggs from hatching, breaking the cycle.

Best flea treatment I've found, but kind of pricey. If you're interested, let me know & I'll add a link to a site in Austrailia that sells it much cheaper over the internet than through your vet or U.S. internet sites.

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

A fleas life cycle is 7 days. We used to have them real bad, they have been here since before we moved in. We will use the carpet powder twice a week, fog once a week, a spray around the edges inside once a week, yard spray twice week. We do this for about 3 weeks and it keeps them down. Pretty expensixe but fleas in the house are worth every bit of it.

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

Have the same problem with my cat. You must get from the vet advantage or program and use the drop vials they have in there( 4 of them ) and use one a month. It takes four months to kill the flea cycle from egg, to adult, to mating, etc. The vials go on weight but they are very effective. If the fleas are bad, you should have a professional come in and do your carpets as the stuff you get on the market are not very effective and cost alot to do the job right. Good luck!!!!!!1

LF, I have the same problem every year. I have found the bombs dont work, even the expensive ones.

The only solution is to kill the fleas on the dog first. Then buy some ENFORCER carpet powder that kills fleas. Also, get some concentrated flea spray that you put in the garden sprayer.

Last time it got bad, I had to take everything out of the garage, wash it down, then spray, throw away the dogs bed, then put down carpet powder in the house. I put down carpet powder again two weeks later.

That finally got them.

Ken

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

This should help.

http://frontline.us.merial.com/

How quickly does FRONTLINE flea and tick protection kill parasites?
When it comes to pet flea control supplies, FRONTLINE products are best of breed. Our research shows FRONTLINE for dogs and cats will kill 100% of your pet's fleas within 18 hours and kills 100% of your pet's ticks within 48 hours of application.

How does FRONTLINE kill fleas before they can lay eggs on my pet?
An adult flea must be present on your pet for at least 24 to 36 hours before it can lay eggs. Our research indicates that FRONTLINE will kill your pet's fleas within 18 hours of application--before the fleas can lay eggs

I treated my pet with FRONTLINE, but I still see fleas in my home. Why?
The fleas you see may have hatched from flea eggs that were laid before you began using FRONTLINE for dogs and cats. Regular application of FRONTLINE flea and tick protection to your pet will break the flea's life cycle.

If you go this route (or advantage or one of the others) let him hang in the house for a while so they will jump on him and die.

I have an indoor/outdoor Tom cat and I have never seen a flea on him or in the house using this product. I also go longer than the recommended application because it works longer than they state.

Edit: All you do with this is put a little vile of it between his shoulder blades onto his skin. Everything else Will take care of itself rather quickly.

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

When you treat the dog also treat the doghouse and whatever the dog uses for a bed. Straw is abad bedding for dogs because it gives the fleas a place to live. Treat the dog, the dogs bed, then the house. Treat the house every 2 weeks for about 3 treatments. They sell flea traps that actually work. They are a sticky paper with a dim warming backlight. Place these on the floor and they work for light infestations. They used to have a yard treatment that would be a good idea too. Treat the property lines and around the house.
A few days after each fogging or spraying in the house, shampoo the carpets. This will help a little.

Raid has a carpet flea spray. IT WORKS! Treat the dog so it doesn't bring fleas in. Treat the carpet and fabrics, treat weekly as needed. We have an indoor cat that got fleas, don't know where from it's an indoor cat. Fleas were horrible, used the Raid a couple of times and the fleas were gone within a month.

Advantage worked for us. Three doses, one per month and then we stopped the treatment. It has been 7 months and no sign of the fleas yet. The vet said that at the first sign of fleas resume the advantage treatment. We vacuumed, then sprayed the carpet with something from the pet store, kept the dog and cat outside until the spray dried. You have to toss the vacuum bag to rid the fleas you vacuum up. Washed all the animals bedding too.

Frontline Top Spot recommends application every three month for fleas. Probably not needed where you live in the winter. But with warmer weather coming up suggest you resume treatment with Frontline Top Spot Plus once every three months to PREVENT the problem from coming back rather than waiting for it to reccur. That way you'll be able to avoid having to treat the carpet.

Have also heard that by pouring salt on the floor and vacuuming it up after you vacuum the floor it kills the fleas in the bag. Can't swear it works, but if so would save needing to put in a new bag each time you vacuuum...box of salt is pretty cheap.

cheapest place I've found for Top Spot Plus:
http://www.vetproductsdirect.com/

Australian site; even with $7 shipping (to NC for me), still cheaper than anywhere else I've found. If you order more than 1 box, shipping doesn't go up much, so if you have other dog owners interested in going in on an order shipping costs can go way down.

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

I actually meant Frontline. Have heard that Frontline Top Spot Plus works better than Advantage even for fleas. Will edit adove post where I mistakenly typed 'Advantage' rather then 'Frontline'.

Re: Getting rid of fleas in the house

I have used both Frontline and Advantage and highly recommend them.As a matter of fact if you keep the pooch on it for a while ,you will be able to stretch the treatment out to every six weeks rather the every 30 days.Charlie

charlie,

don't know about advantage, but frontline recommends every three months for fleas. Once a month if you need protection from ticks...
