AOL: About once in ten logoffs I get a message that I can't delete a protected item. Gotta reboot.

AOL: Incoming Email from any hotmail account is refused with a variety of excuses.

Cursor (from mouse): If I happen to hit a particular pixel the arrow icon stops and wont move. Gotta reboot.

Norton: Auto Live Update runs every hour. I don't know how to reprogram it to weekly.

Norton LiveUpdate: Loads but wont install updates. Trying to track it down gets me the message that it can't install because another program is using that file. Downloaded and installed updated version of LiveUpdate. Same problem.

Norton: All attempts to IM with or talk to a live human being fail.

Is there a straightforward fix (or fixes) for all this ROWRBAZZLE, or do I take it to my friendly neighborhood conehead? :(

My first advice: get rid of Norton! Are you using dial up, if not why AOL? AOL is another program that I don't like because it integrates itself into everything.

Why do you have to call us computer repair people coneheads? ;) :D

Norton AV is a fussy beast. One fart and LiveUpdate always has problems afterward.

Install the free version of AVG 7.1, you can download it from:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

then update it manually, then delete your Norton Anti-Virus. If you use Outlook/Outlook Express or Mozilla, AVG will let you integrate itself so it scans your mail as well.

I call 'puter software people coneheads out of respect, just like I was always called a twidget in the Navy. They do magic on unfathomable stuff.

If I had a vehicle as reliable as every piece of software I ever had I would blow the PEXALUMER up!

No, I am using wireless broadband.

I use aol and norton because I am an old fart and don't like to have to learn the weaknesses of something new that doesn't work worth a bad word either.

If I was really smart I would trash this PERGAKLOSICPEP and use the telephone and the mail.

Only the iboats addiction is preventing that at this moment.

What do you use AOL for?
Seriously, what does it do for you?
Do you just like their home page, or what??

Can fix the entire problem for $500.

Ah Yes....it's been a long while since I wrestled with both AOL and Norton. LiveUpdate is a good idea on paper, and I see that they still have problems. If LiveUpdate gets out of sync with the program versions, you're in big trouble. Putting it right can be a daunting task, for sure. First try this: goto this link, d/l the file and install same. Failing that , goto Add remove programs and dump LiveUpdate, then install latest version.

This should get things started: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/1999092114074613

FYI:

To change your LiveUpdate schedule:

1. Click the button marked Schedule... in the Schedule Virus Definition Updates window.
2. Select a frequency for the update check:
* Daily update checks happen at the same time every day.
* Weekly update checks happen at the same time on the same day of every week.
* Monthly update checks occur at the same time on the same date of every month.
3. Click OK.
4. Click OK again.

To turn off LiveUpdate:

1. Uncheck the box marked Enable scheduled automatic updates.
2. Click OK.

# Norton LiveUpdate will now check (or not check) for updates based on your schedule.

BTW, it really helps to list your Operating System, Service Patchs , type of Internet service and related equipment (modem/router etc) Browser and email client versions too.

You might find this enlightning...http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8624

JB, you can make your own decisions on how far you are willing to go to minimize your exposure to the AOL system. Granted, for some, AOL works fine, for others, they find an easier way. AOL is not the Internet, it's a private network. You don't have to use their client program to surf the Web. The sad part about their software is that it's so intrusive to your computers OS. Trying to remove it completely is a real PITA.

As for Norton, it's no secret where I stand on that issue. Norton has it's problems, there are other programs that do the same job without the bloat. Others have mentioned (me too!) that AVG is a good alternative and it's update engine is fast and sure. Good Luck and keep us posted.

B.C, Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I never get too puffed up under my hat. Just when you think you've got it all sorted out, reality kicks in, and it's usually a kick in the rump. Helping each other out is the name of the game.

Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!

Im glad Im not the only one with norton probs. Live updates installed something that blocked my e-mail. went through my local server we determined it was a norton prob. they gave me a ph # to call norton. after 20 min. on the phone pushing #s I was put in touch with a raghead somewhere (india)? he could barely speak english
after strugling through a 30 min conversation with him, he told me he knew what the prob. was and for $29.95 US dollars he could fix it. I just renewed my subscription with norton 3 months ago. I told him he could kiss my lilly whit a$$ and hung up.
I got on the phone with a friend in montana and with him working with me we determined it was the norton fire wall doing the blocking. I disabled it and everything is back to normal.
At the next renewal time norton is going in the trash.
I ran my old Puter for 7 yrs without a firewall and it still works.

Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!

I learned a long time ago... Norton and McAfee are the bigest wastes of $$. It's AVG for me. Using it on 3 computers. No problems at all! Zip, zero, notta!.

AOL is a whole other topic. The newer AOL software incorporates Netscape. Netscape and MS Internet Explorer 6 don't seem to get along and play nice with each other. I had to totally uninstall Compuserve 7.0 (same as AOL) and fall back to an earlier version that was based on I.E..

I use Outlook to get my email from Compuserve now.

Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!

My honest oppinion? The fewer programs between you and the internet, the better. The less automation, the better.

Software firewalls are evil. A hardware configured firewall is much better. The first thing that happens after you upgrade to Windows XP SP2 is to configure that damn firewall...I don't think so. Norton has their own version also...nope.

AOL = paying for your computer to break.

Norton = paying for your computer to slow down.

Some of the lesser known virus programs work very well and are much less invasive. I try to emulate how a large company protects it's harware and network. Any ISP that says you must use their software to access the internet is full of BS. Complete waste of time, memory and CPU usage.

A little common sense goes a long way. 3/4 of the battle is not opening unfamiliar links/attachments (like the paypal scam in another thread) and watching which websites you visit. I have a couple disk images (with/without software) of my C drive that I can use as a last resort if I need to. I can restore my entire system in a matter of minutes, run the current updates and I'm done.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. :D

Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!

Please explain this whole AOL thing.
What is it ?
What does it do, for you?
What are the benefits?
As far as I'm concerned it is nothing but a limitation on your use of the internet by steering you toward their business partners, an obstruction to using your computer, and a software conflicting nightmare.

OK, I understand if you have to go thru aol because they are your isp, but you don't have to use their im, or their email, or their homepage. Maybe it is time to NOT use them as your isp.

And why do you have to log in, and log off? Can't you just stay logged on?

Way back when there really was not much on an internet they did provide a lot of content which made AOL usefull.

NOW there is only a need to connect to the internet all the STUFF is there and easy to find.

Which is why they have so much trouble keeping people they dont really do anything for you

tommays

I think that AOL knows it as well......prolly why they constantly advertise all their "security" features. Gotta keep people using their service somehow.

We had it when we first had dial-up internet.......ever since we switched to broadband, we havent had it. I have an email addy from them but its through aim.

Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!

We switched to DHL a few weeks ago and used their software/firewall and dumped Norton. We still have AOL 'till August cuz my wife got the phone call from them instead of me. She couldn't understand the woman's accent (Indonesian) and we wound up with a year long contract. I now pay for two internet companies. Come August they're toast!.

Roscoe's right. Get a Mac. Macs have had 68 virus/worms since they were invented, PCs have over 98,000 the last time I checked. Plus, they are extremely user friendly.

spots
