Re: I hate 'puters. RATZAKRATZA!!!
Ah Yes....it's been a long while since I wrestled with both AOL and Norton. LiveUpdate is a good idea on paper, and I see that they still have problems. If LiveUpdate gets out of sync with the program versions, you're in big trouble. Putting it right can be a daunting task, for sure. First try this: goto this link, d/l the file and install same. Failing that , goto Add remove programs and dump LiveUpdate, then install latest version.

This should get things started:

Click the button marked Schedule... in the Schedule Virus Definition Updates window.
2. Select a frequency for the update check:
* Daily update checks happen at the same time every day.
* Weekly update checks happen at the same time on the same day of every week.
* Monthly update checks occur at the same time on the same date of every month.
3. Click OK.
4. Click OK again.

To turn off LiveUpdate:

1. Uncheck the box marked Enable scheduled automatic updates.
2. Click OK.

# Norton LiveUpdate will now check (or not check) for updates based on your schedule.

BTW, it really helps to list your Operating System, Service Patchs , type of Internet service and related equipment (modem/router etc) Browser and email client versions too.

You might find this enlightning...http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8624

JB, you can make your own decisions on how far you are willing to go to minimize your exposure to the AOL system. Granted, for some, AOL works fine, for others, they find an easier way. AOL is not the Internet, it's a private network. You don't have to use their client program to surf the Web. The sad part about their software is that it's so intrusive to your computers OS. Trying to remove it completely is a real PITA.

As for Norton, it's no secret where I stand on that issue. Norton has it's problems, there are other programs that do the same job without the bloat. Others have mentioned (me too!) that AVG is a good alternative and it's update engine is fast and sure. Good Luck and keep us posted.

B.C, Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I never get too puffed up under my hat. Just when you think you've got it all sorted out, reality kicks in, and it's usually a kick in the rump. Helping each other out is the name of the game.
