I have noticed a bunch of members posting about saltwater fishing in MA area (Fly Rod, Ralph etc). Do you guys have fishing charters or do you just fish for the fun of it? The reason I ask - I want to get into saltwater fishing (only done fresh water) and am looking for help getting started.

-JustMrWill

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

:) Good morning JustMrWill

Yes I do have a fishing charter, just click on the little school house on my post!!!!

I've done some commercial fishing and I've done a lot of recreational fishing here at home and and thru out the country!!! Have done a lot of fresh water fishing for trout, land lock salmon and atlantic salmon!!!! now a days I do very little fresh water fishing!!!

My expertise in salt water fishing is strictly around Cape Ann!!!! In Florida and the Bahamas I'm just a novice!!!! I am the worlds worst fly fisherman,I do the opposite of what they teach!!!!

There are plenty of good people on this forum that know about salt water fishing and we all have our own technique and how toos!!!

So, what would you like to know, other then all our very top secret spots!!!!!!! ;)

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

Can ya tell me the very top secret spots? :)

I would like to know where to go for what and how to catch the "what". I don't want to go out an spend money on equipment that doesn't work for what is in the area. I trailer my boat and mostly launch in Weymouth or Naraganset Bay. I am just starting so I really am not sure what type of fish I should be looking for. I hear about blues and stripers all the time...what else is around that is a good sport fish...I am the only one in my family that likes fish so most likely catch and release (most of the time).

I scuba dive all summer with a local dive club but we usually get done diving early (noonish) so am looking for something to do on the boat afterwards that doesn't require "tooo" much planning and equipment. I guess I would mostly be using artifical lures but if live would be better...I need to know what to get (and where) to catch the different type of fish.

Is there any resources (books, websites, etc) that you would recommend...maybe a quick reference chart...with say... type of fish (picture of cource) what they eat, what is good bait/lure/type of presentation, type of equipment (rod length, line strength...leader etc), when they are in the area?

Thanks again for the response.

-JustMrWill

Hey JustMrWill,

First, I am pressed for time so let me just hit some highlights for the Weymouth area -

Stripers, blues, cod, flounder and Dog fish. Tuna around fall.

There are lot's and lot's of ways to go for stripers. Everything from live lining eel, tube and worm, buck tail, chunk bait, etc. A good book about the nature of stripers and the different techniques to fish for them is "Striped Bass Fishing" by Nick Karas. He covers baits, lures, flies, tackle and techniques.

A good way to keep track of what's hot and where on the South Shore is to visit

http://www.southofboston.net/coastlines/

and read the fishing lines report each week once the season begins.

If you're launching around the Wessagusett (sp) ramp in Weymouth, stop by the bait shop at the circle of the Fore River bridge. They are good guys and very helpful with what is hitting, where and using what. They also have great maps and if you want a trolling coarse, by the nice little map they have and he'll lay it out for you.

A good place to ask questions, etc is

http://www.stripersonline.com/ubb547/ultimatebb.php/forum/24.html

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

:) You want to know what takes years to learn, in one post!!! That won't happen unless Ralph or some one else want's to be your mentor!!!

You are suppose to be a diver!!! Therefore you should be seeing stripers on your dive!!!! nobody taught me how to fish!!! My father, uncle, godfather, cousin, were all commercial fishermen, they hated to go fishing for enjoyment!!!! My uncle today when i rent a boat won't go just for the ride!!!

That's what is wrong with you youth and some adults, you want everything handed to you on a silver platter!!! If you come to cape ann look for the white crosses that i throw out to mark the good fishing spots!!!

Are you under 16 then i might have a defferant opinon and help you!!!

Go find your own spots!!!!!!

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

Ralph - Thanks for the info...I'll check out the bait and tackle shop you mentioned (that's the rotaty before the metal draw bridge, right?)

Fly Rod - Thanks also :) I am not looking for a lifetime of information in one post...I just need a good starting spot. I don't want to buy stuff to catch a type of fish that is not "in season". I would prefer to actually catch something every now and then :) While diving, I haven't seen many stripers (but I am usually looking in holes and on the ground for lobsters sooo...I may have missed the large school swim by). When fishing freshwater...I have one or two lures that will catch just about anything in this region...is there any favorite saltwater lures?

-JustMrWill

Yes - it's right in the rotary at 10 o'clock facing the bridge.

I'd say the standby lures for Stripers are the buck tail, the spoon, the diamond jig, plugs, divers, swimmers, plastic eels, etc., etc.

If you want a crash coarse in Stripers buy the book I mentioned above. It will tell you everything you need to know including what kind of places to look for them. Details for Weymouth can be filled in by the bait shop.

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

:) I would have to say that Iam not a lure fisherman!!! 99% of my fishing is with bait when fishing for stripers!!!!! Have started this past season using poppers!!!!

Most of my fishing for bluefish is with lures, cd-18mu mags, these are diving plugs and I will troll or cast them!!! blue/white orange/mustad red/white, the only colors ya need!!!! ;)

Thanks guys!!!

Either of you put your boat out yet this year? If not, when do you usually? I started boating after July 4th last year sooo..didn't have to worry about being "too early". Getting the "itch" and boat should be ready in a week or so....(rebuilding carb and replacing lower unit **damn rock**).

Thanks again.
-JustMrWill

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

:) hopefully mine will be in by the 15th of April
Schoolie stripers might start to arrive shortly after!!! I actully forget when i 1st catch em with the flyrod!!!

Don't know how big your boat is JustMrWill, but a little tip on rod holders if your stern is narrow and you want to troll a couple extra rods you can take 1-1/2" pvc pipe about 14" long and a couple of elbows, glue them together and run them out of your side holders!!! ;)

to JUSTMRWILL,
I fish in narragansett bay, i launch from parent marina in pawtucket and follow the river out in my 16' skiff. I never use live bait, never have.I have no problem catching blues & stripers. some days they hit and somedays they don't. I just landed a 32" striper this week in my way home, beaten and tired, it alsmost stopped my boat, i actually thought i was snagged on a rock until i saw it jump out of the water..yahoo!!

I'll be out on Sunday. I launch at Haines State Park in Barrington. Good luck out there.

Have you tried trolling a tube and worm rig? It is easy to do and very productive. In the upper bay, the smaller tubes do much better than the larger ones. Once you find fish, you can then decide if you want to continue to troll or cast using plastics.

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

:) Sorry about confusing ya!!!! After reading the quote it is hard to understand!!!

Here is what I should have stated:

one lengh of 1-1/2" of pvc about 14" long, with a notch on the bottom end to lock with original rod holder pin to keep pvc from turning!! Glue and add one elbow and then glue another length of 14" pvc!! Do the same for the other side!!!

Note: Some standard rod holders will not accept 1-1/2" pvc!! would show picture but have a hard time trying to get pictures up!!! ;)

JustMrWill,

Did you get out this weekend? I was out this morning for a few hours. We had a good outing. The upper bay continues to be loaded with fish.

Dan

Dan,
I did not get out on Saturday...to many "honey do's" but I went diving out by the Boston Harbor Islands (launched from Weymouth) yesturday...didn't get any fishing in...co-diver did his part "chumming" over the sides...but since he was green..decided to not prolong his misery.

When you say upper bay...can you be more specific?

I have gotten a co-worker all fired up about doing some fishing...he has even suggested going after work in the evening sometimes...so I am planning to be in the bay soon. How is the ramp at Haines? Oakland beach is a drive from my house...but I like the ramp conditions and you can't beat FREE...but if I can find something closer....

-JustMrWill

Re: MA Saltwater Fishermen

I am referring to the northern end of the bay where it meets the Providence River. Warwick on the west side, Barrington and Warren on the west side, down to Prudence Island to the south.

Haines Memorial State Park is fantastic and free. Great ramps in Bullock's cove. Protected from the wind. A ton of parking.

I live in Norfolk, MA and it is very easy to get to.

Email me at dhehn@comcast.net and I will be glad to give you specifics.

Dan

Co-worker and I didn't get a single bite...trolled around and barely saw a single fish on finder...

Boat in out of commission for the past week..and prob for the next one at that..I decided to install a stereo that I bought around Christmas...well...had to find a place for it..
- re-arrange dash..."while I'm at it" I might as well replace panels with new starboard ones..."while I am at it" I might as well re-wire all the gauges and get the gauge lights working...hmmm..stereo not going to fit how I visualized it...gonna have to modify console and make an addition under current one... have to run the speaker wire through cuddy...need to remove some trim to get to headliner..."while I'm at it" I might as well refinish the trim etc etc etc...

I spent atleast 24 hours staring at stuff trying to figure out how to make it work...HOPEFULLY I will be on the water again by next week.

How's the fish been treating you?

-JustMrWill
