I have a 1973 19-6 Aquasport and have removed the 83 150 crossflow in favor for a 1989 120 v4 looper. I had a 17 pitch viper on the crossflow and it ran 5400 rpm wot at 44 mph It never was able to get to 5800

I need a starting point for the 120 as it is now a 2.00 to 1 gearcase and I have no Idea where to start.

Try the 17. The gear ratio should make up for the difference in HP to an extent.

If the looper is a 20" youll need a V4 prop. If its a 25", the V6 style prop will fit. A lot depends on where its mounted -- as far as the X dimension goes. But like Willy said, a 17 is a good starting point.

It is a 20inch motor with the v4 case My viper is a v6 prop. So I will search for a new prop.
What brand will best suit me with this hull and no jackplate?

We've had great luck with the Stiletto and Raker styles on this hull. Very popular around here.

Wait a minute.....somethings coming to me....

What do you think about trying an 18 Turbo Lightning Jr on this rig? (13 1/2 x 18)

Now if we only knew where one was....wait...

dhadley50@aol.com

Walleyehed, any thoughts?

You've got mail

I would live to try it!! I will not get the rig in the water till about march. I just picked up a 21317 stiletto to try. I will let you know what it runs with the stiletto and then maybe try the turbo

Dhadley what do you think about a bobs manual convertable plate for this hull? Where would the be the best place to start?

21/2 inches of setback or 5, 0 degree or 6?

I am replacing the steering with new teleflex nfb before the spring and will size the cable after the motor is mounted. I just cant see bolting the motor back on the transom without putting a plate on it if it will help.

The funds for the plate are a different story but if it will help performance all around then it would be easier to drop 200 bucks for the plate

By the way
I just got done replacing the transom on it cause the flex was bad due to water in the wood but it is composite now and solid as a rock. So strenth is not really and issue with the transom.

We find the Bob's plate works very well on that hull. I've usually gone the 5" route and it's worked real well. I'm kinda partial to Bob's manual plate because of all the configurations. And never had a moments problem with any of his stuff.

Sounds like I am going to get the plate and mounting kit. It will make it much easier to raise the motor with the turbo.

I got the stiletto yesturday and the only thing I can say is wow!!! What a prop, if it works half as good as it looks The boat will do 100 :D

Lol! Maybe not 100 but you'll be pleased.

On the other hand, if it does go 100, get a helmet -- we're going racing!!

I recieved the plate yesturday. Really nice workmanship and really heavy duty.

Should I use it with 6 degrees in or flat?

Re: New motor need prop starting point

I'd mount it straight. We put a 225 on a 19 A. S. a few years ago and it didn't seem to need anything special as far as extra trim in or out.

Jon, are we going to try the 18P Lightning Jr...???? I think you'll like it and with the plate it should work real good.
As you go back with the engine (setback), I've found it actually requires less negative for hole-shot, as Dhadley said.

Re: New motor need prop starting point

Great I will set it up with the 0 degree. You guys are right cause it really did not need anything when the crossflow was mounted on the transom.

Kenny I am going to run the stiletto 17 I just got then compare it with the turbo 18

I bet the turbo is going to be better but I got the stiletto cause I wasn't going to run a jackplate.
This is going to be my first experience with a jackplate where should I start with the x dimension?
I ran the crossflow one hole from the top on the transom but now I have the small gearcase a smaller diameter prop and 5 inches of setback.

When I mount the motor on the plate Should I mount the engine in the lowest hole?

Dhadley a 225 looper on a 19 A.S. must have been interesting

This guy is nuts, Jon....speed freak if you will.. :D It's easy to get hooked on....
As for X-dimension, realize the transome angle puts the engine back down as you increase setback, so as a starting point, I think I would set up for the AV plate being 1/2" above bottom of boat, or even flush if you want, just to get a reference.

Re: New motor need prop starting point

Sounds good ,1/2" above to start it will be. I still have to paint the transom and put back some hardware then rig the new controls and steering. ss147 nfb teleflex along with running the oil line and wiring from the oil tank to the motor. But the motor is done and ready to be rigged and the transom progressed much faster than expected due to the warm winter we are having up here. So aside from getting married on friday and going to plya del carmen mexico for a week I should be done in early march and have some baseline numbers then
