Bought an old 14' ski boat with a 1975 40 HP "Electric" Johnson. Don't know anything about it----are there any funny problems with this year & model?

The engine has a manual choke and I see a "choke" control on the rudimentary dash. Would somebody please give me a typical starting procedure? I am told the engine was running correctly two years ago.

I have ordered a factory manual and intend to clean & revalve the carb(s) plus maybe change impeller if I can find it.

1st model number will help. need to know if it is electric shift or manual shift. you need to read in the engine faq forum(top of this page click boating forums then click engine faq, read awakening a sleeping outboard.) dump old gas, make sure tank is clean, new gas and oil,50-1 mix 6gallons of gas to 16 oz of tcw3 outboard motor oil. connect hose to tank, look a arrow on the bulb, point to engine, , stick a small nail or the like in the end of the hose that connect to the engine, pump bulb a couple of time to clean any old crud from the hose. ( this is just for the first time, then disregard) now remove nail, connect fuel to engine, pump bulb till hard. lift fast idle lever assuming you have a single lever controller, (the choke on the engine has 3 postion s, pull all the way out is manual choke, 1 click in it allows you the use the choke button on dash, if working, this is the normal position, all the way in the choke is disabled) push the choke button and listen for a click, is you have a click the electric choke is working, if not pull choke all the way out. hold choke button, turn key and start, try for a couple of seconds , the pump bulb and repeat sequence, go easy on the choke on later times to start , don't flood it. make sure there is a waters source to the engine before trying to start. either a big garbage can filled with water, and keep the hose running to replenish what the motor throws out, or run it on muffs. even trying to start without water will ruin the impeller (water pump that cools the engine) if it doesn't start get back with us. i'm sure ther are goin gto be many more ?'s.

Have (original) manual ($43 !!!) which is vague on the water pump. Please tell me what sort of muff to use and where to put it to assure forced water flow into the pump before I attempt ignition. livelyankee

go to iboats store search flush system. top of page are the tempo muffs. i prefer the 962RMK type as they are rectangular, and fit more engines. walmart sells the same style by seasense for around $10.00.. aboue the prop antivent. plate is a screen type opening , you place the muffs over the inlet area, turn the water on, the try to start;. good luck

TNX Tashasdaddy. The manual points to just in front of the exhaust port (under the anticav plate) and says this is the water inlet. The picture does not show the line of holes just above the anticav plate which is where I think (and you say) the inlet is. Rectangular muff would be required and I'll get one. I would dearly like to force water up into the pump before I try to fire it up. But nothing will happen until this 90+ heatwave goes away---far too hot outside for this old guy.

Muffs don't fit that outboard as it's water intake is on the exhaust "fin" behind the propeller. Use a bucket of water, with the water line up above the bolted seam between the lower unit and the midsection. This is about 4" above the anti-ventilation plate.

Should get a good gush of water out the back a few seconds after you start up. If not shut down. You'll want to service the water pump even if you do seem to have decent cooling. Standard with any outboard is to service at least every few seasons, and more often in salt water (to exercise the screws and bolts) or sandy water.

Don't rev it in neutral. Not good for it.

Re: '75 40 HP Electric Johnson

TNX Paul Moir for info. Unfortunately I have already ordered the rectangular muff shipped via air.

So back to the bucket idea. Now as for overhauling the pump,. where do I find parts? IBoats says there is no kit for this motor. Is the '75 40EL interchangeable with some other year or HP?

Engine has never been in salt water and looks reasonably free of corrosion.

The p/n for the water pump is 391741 from a Johnson or Evinrude dealer, or 18-3379 from Iboats, NAPA autoparts, etc.

Both are fairly pricey I'm afraid. About $45-$60.

Paul:

Many TNX for the info. I am on the verge of a first attempt and if there's any problem with water flow I'll get a pump. Livelyankee

Re: lower unit exchange

Re: lower unit exchange

I have a '75 40HP Johnson elelctric. I see a '62 Evinrude-Johnson lower unit up to 40 HP for sale. Would this unit fit on my '75? Something about the number of splines on the driveshaft, etc If it isn't definite that it would fit I don't want to be bothered with buying it on spec.
