I have a '75 40HP Johnson elelctric. I see a '62 Evinrude-Johnson lower unit up to 40 HP for sale. Would this unit fit on my '75? Something about the number of splines on the driveshaft, etc If it isn't definite that it would fit I don't want to be bothered with buying it on spec.

OK Guys forget the Lower Unit exchange idea. We Have a Runner!! I worried about no fuel leakage so expected a major stoppage somewhere but opened the carb. drain and got plenty of output. Rebuilt the ignition completely, bypassed the failed Neutral Safety switch, applied Starter Fluid and away she goes!!! Plenty of water flow and even a lot of drain-down after I shut off so now must see if the Boat Floats!!

TNX to all for support & info.

Good stuff! :)

Get on that water pump anyway, because if it dies so does your engine. I found out a little more about those water pumps lately - those P/Ns I gave you update the plastic housed pump. If you still have the old metal one and it's still good, you can pick up an impeller for it for about $25. P/N is 386165. The metal housing itself is N/A and the stainless wear plate is a special order.

The plastic replacement pump is superior as it can be completely rebuilt, but you'll have to spend about $60 at the dealer to get it.
