when i head out across the lake my tach stops working? some times it works at idle. i figure it is just a loose connection on the motor and is stopping from vibration. where is the tach wire connected. i already checked the back of the tach and everything seems to be in order there.

Welcome 00powerstrokin!

Go back to the engine on the starboard side and look for a small can on a triangular base. This is the rectifier. Should have three yellow leads and a red lead coming from it.

Look for the yellow lead with a gray stripe. There should also be a gray wire connected there....this would be the signal wire to the tach. If the rectifier goes bad, the tach will likely stop working. Check the rectifier out and see if it's still good and check for lose connections on the terminal strip.

i forgot to mention that when the tach does work it only reads 3000-3400 rpms. but the motor sounds like it is wide open

If you rectifier is working, charging system will put out DC current. Connect a multimeter to the output and see what you have. If rectifier is shot, you can either replace it with original or use a Radio Shack cheap replacement.

[/whisper] the red wire was loose. but the grey was tight. i will get it out and put the dog ears on it tomorrow to see if it works now. what are the chances of the tach being bad?
