Bought a '67 Thunderbird OMC I/O 231 GM/Buick V6. Boat idled but would pop and heat-up very quickly under throttle. Replaced the impeller and housing. Ran better, but same thing under throttle. Changed plugs and discovered a cylinder pumping water. Removed head and saw a badly damaged head gasket. Replaced head gasket. Boat started and sounded better than ever, but would stall at idle after about 5 secs. Turned the screw on the front of the carb counter-clockwise half turn. Boat now runs fine at idle. When I took her out, it seems that the bow is up way too high and she is really under a load, then the popping then stall. She will start back up though. Is the carb bad? How does the float compensate for the dramatic bow rise? Could the bow rise be the root of my problem? The boat was out of the water for three yrs. Dual tanks but only topped off one with new fuel. Gas smells OK.
