Bought a '67 Thunderbird OMC I/O 231 GM/Buick V6. Boat idled but would pop and heat-up very quickly under throttle. Replaced the impeller and housing. Ran better, but same thing under throttle. Changed plugs and discovered a cylinder pumping water. Removed head and saw a badly damaged head gasket. Replaced head gasket. Boat started and sounded better than ever, but would stall at idle after about 5 secs. Turned the screw on the front of the carb counter-clockwise half turn. Boat now runs fine at idle. When I took her out, it seems that the bow is up way too high and she is really under a load, then the popping then stall. She will start back up though. Is the carb bad? How does the float compensate for the dramatic bow rise? Could the bow rise be the root of my problem? The boat was out of the water for three yrs. Dual tanks but only topped off one with new fuel. Gas smells OK.

When you are slowly going along I assume the boat is normal in the water and the bow up is as you accelerate. I think the bow up is normal as the boat tries to get onto the plane but you are not getting enough power to pop it out of the hole. How many rpm are you pulling before the popping and stalling?. Have you checked the timing and is the prop the correct size?

Adding good fuel to bad only gives you contaminated fuel...lots of it. Better off pumping it out and running your mower with it. Also, you are not sure of what may be in the tank itself. But back to square one. 67 vintage? Start with the basics....ignition tuneup to specs. points/cond/cap/rotor/coil/plugs/wires. All filters, fuel (2) and if you have a water seperator dump the contents in a jar to see whats in the tank around the fuel pickup. Do you have a manual for those ign specs. Once you are sure the tank and Ignition are proper, maybe time for the carb. If it's orginal, may have to be replaced. Carb body can deteriorate. All this is based on the fact that the compression has been checked and there is hope for recovery. Also, when you had it apart, did you have the manifolds checked, they are also a source of water intrusion...

yup! do the basics from scratch, there is no simple road here. Do it all, do it properly. Good luck.
