i have a '72 glastron w/ 115hp inline six. got the boat w/ motor for a little labor. had to replace internal wiring harness and alt. stator due to burned wires. tried to start it but didn't fire. when motor is lifted for transport or storage i see a small amount of fuel out of the choke plate area. rumor has it the boat sat for a long time, restored to service w/ tune-up. what i'm i in for and where to start?

Get compression checked first. Check for spark at all cylinders. You can get an inexpensive spark tester at a auot parts store. If both of those are good, you will want to get the impeller changed as well.

Do you have 12 v at the starter?

Do you have 12V to the red terminal on the switch box?

Do you have 12v at the white terminal when the key is turned on?

The fuel is OK, mine did the same after priming the bulb, but the moter won't start.

Inlines typically leak gas like that. Could be as simple as a float that needs adjustment (just getting to the float is time consuming).

There is a topic in the FAQ which describes some of the items that should be looked at to revive a motor that has sat for a long while. The fuel system, including the supply lines and bleeder lines should be inspected and replaced. Carbs should be cleaned with new gaskets, needles, seats. Inspect the plugs/wires. Clean out the distributer cap and inspect for cracks. Follow the timing recommendations also listed in the FAQ, aiming for 21° max. Don't overlook the requirement to replace the water pump impeller, and change the gear oil.

I too have a '72 Glastron with a '72 1150. I would be very interested to know what model Glastron you have. Any pics?

Good luck.

chief, thanks for responding. you answered one of my other questions, i added a voltmeter to this boat and that white ignition post would be where i attatch the meter-didn't know that was the ignition post. i pulled the dist. cap and found the center carbon post froze in place by grease or the like. cleaned it up bad weather haven't had a chance to try.

captain, but i shouldn't be seeing this? i pulled the spark plugs and noticed a lot of wetness from fuel. this engine started the day the man showed it to me but i noticed he was very gentle when priming the bulb, could poor float control be flooding this engine right off the bat.

ensign, thanks for the reply. i'm starting to get a good picture of the : back-in-service procedures. i wish i would have been the first to get this boat out of storage as i have know idea what real precautions were taken. it appears -by marks on nuts and screw-driver slotts that the carbs have been touched; however, as stated this engine really looks well taken care of. should i ignore what i think i see and do these steps anyway.

Re: 1972 1150 115hp engine observations

chief, i failed to mention the man started this engine w/ fairly little effort the day i got it and i'm sure it had not been warmed-up for i was with him for about 4 hrs that morning. i don't even know how it started w/ the wires burned-up the way they were. i hear this is a very cold-natured engine and i'm not one to continually cranking a motor that i can tell isn't going to start, i feel strongly i have fire but the fuel or lack-there-of is where i believe the problem to be.

Did you use the high idle lever and choke when you tried to start it?

ensign, scratch last question!! they are talking about retard and advance but, i'm confused about where a timing light comes into play w/out the motor running.... i could build you a 700hp sm. block chevy but, this timing advance in corralation? is that correct spelling? w/throttle increase escapes me...for now!!
