On 9-11? At work glued to the radio (no tv available).

When Reagan was shot? Teaching a class and I was notified by a friend.

When the Pope was shot? Once again teaching and told by a co-worker.

When President Kennedy was shot? In Catholic school and we were led into group prayer.

Re: Where were you???

Pulling into the parking garage (AA headquarters) when I heard about the first tower, assumed it was a private aircraft, traffic watch or something. In the office a few minutes later, heard about the second, knew right away life would never be the same. It was another fifteen minutes or so before word filtered down that they were commercial airliners...

Re: Where were you???

I was dressing to head out to an appointment downtown with the City of LA. Wife had the TV on watching from bed. First one had hit a few minutes earlier. She says she'll never forget my simple "uh, oh". I actually thought it was a small private plane as the hole seemed small at first, and for a second thought it was an L.A. building, I guess I was thinking that's where I was headed. I still went to the appointment. I watched in the lunch room with some guys in the City's refuse department. When I left around lunch time the whole city was basically deserted. People all went home, there was no traffic. Surreal.

JFK, too little, but I remember the funeral procession. The only other event like that where time stood still for me was the Challenger disaster. I was also at a refuse account appointment . . .

Re: Where were you???

Pearl Harbor: Listening to The Jack Benny Show on the radio. They interrupted to announce it.

VJ Day: Camping on an island in Lake Sebago, ME. A counselor from our boys camp came in a canoe to tell us about it.

JFK : On my way to a service call. Heard it on the car radio.

MLK: Teaching a class of Brazilian AF Officers how to use some high tech gear. They all wept.

RFK: Fishing on the Fox River in WI. Nearby boat had a radio on.

Challenger: Stood in the parking lot with my class at Total Technical Institute in Ft. Lauderdale and watched her explode.

Columbia: Stood on the back porch of The Hideout and watched her burn up and disintegrate

9/11: Sitting right here moderating, with the Today Show on the little TV beside me. Traded IMs with my son, who was also watching it live.

Re: Where were you???

9/11: Stuck in the barracks on Okinawa during a monster typhoon. We were already on lockdown for the typhoon(standard procedure, close the bases for them), and didn't get off lockdown for about a week afterwards because of the WTC attacks. I was actually playing video games with my friends, and one of them had the TV on(middle of the night there though).

Columbia: driving through Nebraska, just getting back from Okinawa, and driving from CO to MD via Chicago. Couldn't see anything in the Nebraska skies though. All radio stations(what few there were) interupted to report it.

Re: Where were you???

I was in bed when most of it started, woke up to the alarm clock telling me about it. I watched the towers collapse live on TV a few hours later in my political science class. I'll never forget my teacher saying "oh s***" as they fell.

Re: Where were you???

On 9/05 an old Army buddy of mine had flown to NY w/his wife from Oregon and visited me on 9/9. He had diner on 9/10 and flew home. During his visit he had stayed at the Millenium Hilton and had dined atop of the World Trade.

JB - Challenger I was on my way to a meeting at Hdqrtrs in NY and when I arrived the meeting was cancelled but all the TV's were on. I recall the exact spot on the road I was driving on in my Gov Car.

Columbia I was at work but able to watch the TV.

I was also at work (Stationed in MO) when the first bobm went off below the world trade.

As a HS Senior we were given a tour of the WTC being constructed and we were on the roof (then was only the 44th floor) while it was under construction.

I was on my way from Phoenix to Las Vegas. When I got to Las Vegas, it was surreal. Not a sole on the streets. Very spooky.

A British Airways crew barely escaped major harm when they drunkenly spouted anti American sentiments in the hotel lobby that night. Idiots.

9/11 At work, saw the second plane strike the tower on TV in the conference room.

Challenger at work listened to it on the radio.

JFK real young not yet 5 but remember my grandmothers reaction as it was announced on TV.

On the lighter side, remember the entire family gathering at my grandparents to witness mans first steps on the moon.

9/11- I was unemployed, and asleep in my parents basement. It was about 8:00 MST, and my mother came banging on the door. She said something about a missle attack.

Man Im glad that is a (not so) distant memory. Life seems totally different now in so many ways.

Re: Where were you???

I was at a kickoff meeting for a workshop at work. My neighbor had his laptop and he was surfing CNN. We couldn't beleive our eyes.

My companies headquaters was right across the street and my boss had an office that now looks down into the hole. They all fled safely. I remember sitting in Mpls and watching the emergency procedures kicking in and reports of our NY staff being accounted for. For those who have any exposure to disaster recovery planning, you joke about the smoking hole scenario. For our company we had a smoking hole scenario and our business continuation plans went into implementation, including offsite relocation for the next year and a half.

I also remember the posts on Iboats checking on members that worked in NY and the hope that they did not perish.

Re: Where were you???

An hour and a half away in Trumbull, CT. Was heading to Hartford, CT to do a job and heard it on the radio, kept listening as the second tower got hit and I knew it can only be terrorist. By the time I got to Hartford, the radio jockey said both towers are gone. I was extremely upset by this time. Got done with the job, got a call from the boss said to come back to the office and go home.
