Re: camshaft enquiry form

You probably have a 260/273 to start with so it not that bad. It would be a lot better if you did some work to the bottom end. You will be lucky to have 9 to 1 compression with those stock pistons. Put some flat tops in there and it would come alive. With out them..... hummmm.......

I agree with you..............
they missed the boat.
I think there is a better Hydro Roller cam.
Stall converter to 2500 rpm(auto trans) kinda
misses the hole shot don't it.
It will run strong after that.......................

Re: camshaft enquiry form

I have alot of time and some money to spend this winter and I want to add some hp to my stock engine. The first thing I am going to get is some vortec heads. I also want to go to a hydraulic roller cam and self aligning roller rocker arms. I am not looking for maximum hp, but something around 300-325 would be nice. I want something tractable with a good holeshot for skiing and some top end for fun. With the setup I have now the holeshot is pretty good with wot at about 50. I have been reading everything I can on cams (still know little), and the one recommended seemed out of place for what I want. Anyone done what I want to, or have some suggestions.

Re: camshaft enquiry form

I am assuming you have an '86 or older engine and want roller lifters. From Dennis Moore's book, look at Crane #119611 (HR-260-2-12IG). He indicates 15-20hp increase over stock. It does require aftermarket roller lifters, pushrods, camshaft thrust botton, and hardened tipfuel pump pushrod.

Also mentions a Crane #119621 (HR=276-2S=12IG) for 25-30hp, but requires stronger valve springs.

Thanks John, That is what I think I am looking for. I do know that since I have a pre 87 block I will need to do all of that and MOORE d:) . I really wish i could get a copy somehow of his book. I am leaning toward the second level with stronger valve springs. Does he mention which ones?

The valve springs needed for any cam will be listed with the cam specs.

292 duration and 9:1 compression will be far from a smoth idle

Re: camshaft enquiry form

Mid range and upper end horsepower always comes at the cost of low end power. Since a boat has no transmission, low end grunt is essential. As everyone is indicating, a cam with 2000 rpm lower limit will not cut it. You are looking for something more like a truck cam profile.

Re: camshaft enquiry form

Dennis didn't say in that cam recomendation, but mfast is correct. He does talk valve springs in another chapter. I agree, they should do another printing of the book. Seems like there would be enough demand.

Personally, I would not go to that cam. If your flat based mercruiser cam is fine, might even stay with that. The first crane I mentioned, along with the vortec heads, intake and 4brl are going to get your 300hp requirement.

Can't find the second cam. The first will get me what I need and provide good manners. I sent an inquiry to comp cams as well, but so far no reply.

280ah from comp cams is a good all around performer, the 260 is good for all out torque and midrange power and will still turn 5000

Re: camshaft enquiry form

I mis-spoke on the springs for the crane #119621 cam. Dennis does give part numbers. Crane: 99846 and Chevy: 10134358. I'd still recheck with cam makers recommendation.

not sure if i'm off subject here but i've been told at a boat show if you have wet exaust you can't put too much duration in your cam as the engine will inhale water

Re: camshaft enquiry form

179.00 is for a master kit. Try this http://www.naparts.com/ProductModelDetail.cfm?ProductModelId=712

If you cant click on the address then put it in your address box and go to it.
Also if you are doing all that you should get matching valve springs.
As for being to big and will suck up water. He is no even close to doing that even with the other one. You just have to watch the overlap when running big cams in boats.
