Fuel water separator failure?

Wow, i didn't know the fuel/water unit on a merc could just "fail", and I'm not talking about the filter, I'm talking about the actual unit!

I haven't had time to dissect it, but my darn formula 272 would absolutely NOT run over 2000 rpm, and was losing fuel spray around that rpm into the carb. Thinking it was a fuel problem, naturally, i replaced the pump, checked the voltage, then the filter inside the quadrabog, STILL had the same problem!

Only after i ran a direct line from the pump to the carb did it "voila" the problem. Any idea why a unit like this would fail? It's just a pass-through design, with no moving parts, right?

Anyway, if you ever get this symptom, you'll know what it is!

[colour=blue]No moving parts but it is a filter that is designed to trap stuff. Sounds like you trapped too much stuff!

When was the last time it was changed? The fuel filter is a critical maintenance item and should be changed regularly (and always carry a spare onboard).

The Filter might be Plugged,........

The Housing might be Plugged,.......

But,.... I Doubt the Housing Failed,.........
Unless it Corroded,+ Fell Apart............

I've seen double filter gaskets installed which cause air leaks, cracks where the fittings were put in too tight or with teflon tape, cracked or leaky lines going to the filter which allow the filter to suck air instead of fuel.
Wrong type of clamps. Can't use those 1/2" wide clamps on small hose, they just flat spot the hose and you get an air leak.
Also have seen the gasket surface so corroded and rough they could never seal.
To make matters worse, you have now blamed the fuel filter, and it may not be the problem. What about the vent, the antisiphon valve, the fuel pickup tube in the tank.
Might want to READ THIS and do some troubleshooting before you throw anymore money at it.
