Re: I wanna know...

And CJY, who in this country has no education AND has a need/want to write to their politician?.?...........NOBODY.

College education has nothing to do with it. I agree with custum....................all the education you need to write a letter with proper English occured before High School.

Regardless of the republican label you do not want, you make a good follower then. How does that suit you?

You would make a great politician. You don't listen, you twist others words to suit yourself, and it's obvious you have a personal agenda that doesn't give a shist about the truth....

I am not fulfilling my own agenda. If that were the case, I would not be asking you for further explanation. You explained and not very consistently, I might add. Tell me what I twisted. I simply used your own words to show inconsistencies with what you said. I do listen, obviously better than you hoped for.

Pony, you said;

"And CJY, who in this country has no education AND has a need/want to write to their politician?.?...........NOBODY."

That point is irrelevant. The point is, if you are an American with the right to vote, you have the right to be heard whether or not that person has an education. It makes no difference whether or not they choose to use that right. Tell me where you draw the line between educated and uneducated. Do all politicians draw the line in the same place?

It was not so long ago when women were not allowed to vote, blacks were not allowed to vote, or sit at the front of the bus for that matter. They were considered inferior, much like it sounds you are claiming in regards to the "uneducated." Whether you believe they are inferior or not are again irrelevant. If they have a right to vote, they have a right to be heard no matter their grammar or ability to spell. Any politician that believes otherwise makes mayfloat's point.

Completely true there. Everyone who is old enough, and can legally vote, has had a fair shake at being able to write a legitimate letter. And even if they completely suck at it, there are resources available that can help one out in this endeavor. Even a trip to the local library, as outdated as it may be for some, can get you someone who can proof read the letter for you.

College education has nothing to do with it. I agree with custum....................all the education you need to write a letter with proper English occured before High School.

While that is true, there are a LOT of people getting through high school these days, with a 5th grade education. Unfortunate, yes. But I don't blame the schools for that either. It's the child and their parents.

And I never gave the email/snail mail issue much thought. I know email makes it easier, for sure. And you can address everyone in one fell swoop. I'll have to try it the old fashioned way(well, not too old fashioned, spell check is my friend) next time.

Custom,

You said'

"If I run across a post with no punctuation, just 200 words strung together in one long sentence, I skip it... to hard to make any sense out of it. I'm sure politicians are the same way. "

You then say, I would make a good politician. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Everyone has the right to be heard. But, if you all you speak/read/write is Spanish, you should probably make it a point to get a translator to write the letter for you. Same goes with basic education. And it is just that, basic. If you can't, for whatever reason, write a letter that can be understood, find someone to write it for you. If you are too lazy to do that, maybe you don't have any business writing to them. More likely though, you won't bother, because you were too lazy in the first place.

Everyone has a right to be heard. But I think the one doing the speaking should, at a minimum, find the time to make what they speak understandable to the other party.

Speedwagon,

Speaking something other than the national language is an entirely different subject and I could not agree with you more. In fact, I will not argue your other points either because we agree on my only point.

Everyone has the right to be heard, everyone.

QC,

BTW, if I am being completely honest, maybe just a little spin on my sigs. Without any person being named by Shaw or Einstein, they said one he77 of a lot with those statements. A bit prophetic, in my opinion.

But every time someone on the forum here gets called on their atrocious grammar, spelling or typing skills, everyone jumps in to defend them, saying how mean and petty it is to criticize someone's writing skills... ??

Then we rant about how low the standards are in public education and how not enough is expected of our young people in school....

??!!

Re: I wanna know...

I am very guilty of lack of proper grammer and spelling when posting. Mostly its due to laziness I guess.
I never mastered the art of cursive writing and my printing is rather illegible.
I type my letters now.
With modern printers and spell checkers it takes some of the burden off of me.
The nicest thing is my youngest sister was a technical writer for the EPA in Washington DC for 15 years or so.
I send my letters to her for technical inspections so I dont look like a total fool when corresponding with various people.

I am with the rest though, if you dont know how thats what libraries are for.
Especially near a university as most the assistants are nice looking and willing to help an old fool :).

LOL... same here, well... kinda.

I mastered those arts as a kid but my hands have been crunched so many times I just can't hold a pen or pencil for more than a few minutes without my hands cramping up.. God bless Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. 8)

Yeah, that's why I liked them, but they (the quotes) can be taken many ways.

Speaking of many ways, I thought I would at least get some carp for: "trust me, I'm a salesman" :%

Re: I wanna know...

Who says that none of the poorly written and gramatically incorrect letters of correspondence to a congressman weren't read and the person that wrote them was not represented?I suspect that they were read and discarded. How else would they have known to disregard them?My guess is that the content of the message in many are no more intellectually thought out than the poor manner in which they were composed.
Kind of like a bad contestant on American Idol that just can't seem to understand why the judges see no talent in their performance when in fact they came ill prepared to begin with.

OB, I suspect most letters go right in the round file as soon as a staff person gets the address for the return form letter.

The only way to get a politicians attention is with a petition... signed by as many as you can get. One voice gets lost in the static... 10, 20, 30 thousand voices will make them sit up and take notice.
