protecting classic wooden speedboat!

I have just purchased 1963 wooden speedboat which will for time being be stored outside under breathable cover but not on trailer, can or should a wooden boat be treated inside with these teak oils or similar products, I am thinking of protecting the wood from moisture, any advise please, many thanks for now JBD

I see there are no responses to your post. Not because we don't like you, 8) but probably because there are not a lot of members here with wood boats.

You should continue to search for forums that specialize in wood boats.

If you get an answer somewhere else please come back here and post it. I am not a wood guy but I would guess that the best way to seal unpainted wood is with spar varnish - maybe thinned a tad.

I'd get an 'over' cover to keep a layer of air between the boat and it's cover. I tried to find a link to show you what I mean but could not. Ah, I just figured it out. I will post a pic of my boat. I got this 'over' cover from Costco for 169.00 US. You probably do not have Costcos in the UK, but this is what will keep your boat from sweating and forestall the need for you to prematurely have to coat the inside of the boat with anything. I live in the wet (9 mo's out of the year) Pacific Northwest USA and this was the very best thing I could have stored my boat under except for indoors.

I may have misunderstood your requirement. I thought you were just trying to protect the inside of the boat from the coming wet winter.

There are some really good websites out there for wood boat and the applicble finishs and treatment....the one thing I do know is if you apply the wrong varnish etc, you can do more harm then good. Hence why I will now shut up !!

Thanks all, yes you were correct I'm trying to protect the boat from ravages of winter and just wondered if coating the wood with some kind of teak oil would help, I have a breathable cover which I will try and keep it above the boat to allow circulation of air, my boat was built 1963 and has been stored for 35 years, I'll try post pictures, last year my glassfibre boat was continually wet despite 2 covers, which must have been causing moisture, Thanks again, JBD

I wouldn't use any coating to temporarily protect your boat from sweat moisture. The tighter you cover the more sweat you will encounter.

Can you hook up any kind of timed fan and ducting to ventilate the inside of the boat? Before I had my over-cover, my canvas cover had air vents at the top of it. I used to hook up a fan, inside the boat, on a timer and let it run thru the morning hours when the dew point was most likely to cause condensation. It worked very well.

Deerhound, If you plan to finish the hull with spar urethane or spar varnish, I would be concerned using any oil or wax on the bare wood. It will be hard to get the ultimate finish to stick to the oily surface. Just cover it well with a waterproof cover, and have enough ventilation to prevent rot.

Congradulations on you new boat. Cover it and keep the fresh water out. Don't worry about much else. You don't need to treat anything. It will be fine for the winter. We have 7 wooden boats in the family and part of the family restores them for a living. Some are stored inside some out through out the winter. They are covered and kept dry that's about it.
