Well folks it looks like I have went off the deep end this time. We started on the new house Monday. Actually it was about 2 months ago when they poured the piers but... actual construction began Monday Oct 30. Its about 1850 living area with over 1200 in porch. Two story with wraparound porch. They have done all of this since Monday and its the first time I've been able to get pics up. I'm playing general contractor and subbing out the dry-in, siding, and roofing. The rest of the subs is ME! I'll have a freind help with the HVAC, and another with the painting. Along the way I'm sure that I'll have more freind help every so often, couldn't do it without freinds and family. Ya'll keep me sane cuz I know this ain't fun but its how I can afford what I want. I'll keep this as updated as possible.

That's kinda the way I built mine. If you have any builder's auctions to go to in your area, you can get some great deals. there. I upgraded about $13,000 in quality for $6,000 less! Have fun with it - building your own house can be frustrating at times, but afterwards it is very rewarding!

Will be anxious to see it come to completion.

Re: Pics of my new house under construction

We've been buying stuff on clearence at the box stores/auctions/etc. Our shower for the master bath cost $932 plus the shipping charges. Lowes had ordered the wrong color (biscuit instead of white) so they were stuck with it. They had it marked at $280. Its exactly what we have been trying to find except for the color. Well...... We didn't have anything else bought yet so the color didn't really matter. Its also about 10 feet away from the sink and it'll be pretty much hidden by the door and frame so we bought it. Bought my water heater at a surplus center for about $125 less than the box stores charge, and it was still in the wrapper with all paperwork, no dents or scratches, nothing wrong with it. Got 2 interior doors at the same place for about 25 less normal. Our washing machine at the current house went out about 2 weeks ago. It was gonna cost almost $200 to have it fixed so we said pizz on it. Bought a new front loader on a zero interest 1 yr note AND recieved a $125 shopping card for doing so. I'll be buying my wall insulation in the morning. I don't need it right now but its on sale and if ya buy over $299 then ya get a $75 or $100 shopping card. Would you believe I need about $315 worth? I'm cheaper than a fishes bottom so I'm definetly looking for the deals. The poor guys in the building trades here are gonna get tired of me asking questions I'm sure.

By the way- Heres what its gonna look like when completed, same plans but were doing it a little different, not much.

It is good to watch the quality forming around you! Make it as maintenance free as possible to free up the boating time.

KB, what's with the piers for the foundation? I've never seen that before.

And where is the shop and boat garage?:p

Re: Pics of my new house under construction

Bob- Metal roof, Temple Inland siding (similiar to Hardi), Pex plumbing, a septic designed almost twice as big as necc, and a 40 space breaker box so everything is overkill there. Yep, ought to be pretty simple to maintain.

Boom- The piers go down 12', they are 12" across. They were supposed to be 15' deep with a 30" bell at the bottom but we hit watersand at 12'. The man doing the job, plus the actual driller, and evry other "expert" I talked to said this was actually a good thing. The piers made there own bells. The concrete kept gouing in and sinking till it stabilized. The bells are probably about 48-55" now. Its solid as anything you'll ever see, almost like a bridge pier.
The boat hasn't left water in 6 years. I keep it on my dads lake in a boathose. He, and his sisters, own the entire 55 acre lake so thats where it stays.
Look in the third pic original post. The red thing in the back is the garage/carport. Its a 24X24 garage w/16 door and a 24X24 carport, all as one unit. No cars except toys will go in the garage, its made for work, not storage. Heres a pic of it-

Boomyall, Texas has a lot of movement in the soil. Heavy clay in the area I live for example. The piers support the house, so that the expansion/contraction doesnt mess up the foundation.

Gottcha Twidget. After hearing KB's description, I have seen that kind of pier w/bell bottom construction before, but it was on hillsides in Southern California. Those babies aren't going anywhere for sure.

Re: Pics of my new house under construction

Twidget hit it on the head. I may have 1 foot of topsoil, then 3 feet of clay, then 2 feet of sand, then who knows what at the next level. Move over 2 feet and its 4 feet of topsoil, one foot of clay, then sand. It is never consistant except for one thing- When clay gets wet or gets dry it moves, and alot. In my current house (sitting on blocks) I have a 1/2" gap on the east side of the doors in the winter, in the summer its a 1/2" gap on the west side. This thing just moves too much for me so went for the overkill approach. Its getting pretty common here now.

These are the entrance doors. The one in front goes to the back, the other is a Frenched unit. The wife will paint them rustic red to match the metal roof and garage.

I have a few power tools that would fit nicely in the garage. 2 Tablesaws, miter saw, wood lathe, routers, etc.
All in very good condition and going for a good price.

Ken,

Rock on! I guess this makes it a working holiday. Progress is outstanding. Love the "V" layout on the porch and the vertical layout vs horizontal.
