This motor was given to a friend, It has set up for two or three years. The previous owner must have gave up on it...w/ new fuel and "sea foam" additive, it starts and runs fine. When I run it, it sounds rough and will not power my 14' boat like it should...in fact, my 9.9 converted to 15 will run circles around it. it shifts great, and doesn't bog down at all, just won't run fast like it should...not good acceleration either. Where do I start? is is possible to be running off 1 cylinder? Maybe just a clogged high speed jet? How is the easiest way to get carb off? Also I'm trying to figure out what year this motor is...Ser # OB294911, electric start, tiller handle. On my little 14-36 boat, (20 hp rated), this motor should be too much, but is not. Where to start? Any easy ways of testing these things? Also the Choke does have a little affect on the motor at idle, but takes a minute to choke it dead. Also the kill switch doesn't work. Any help would be great. !!

Also the choke is not a choke its a primer, your kill switch not working could be part of the problem it could be causing a ign problem to ck that disconnect the blk/yellow wire for the kill circurt at the ign box and test run

Re: Mercury 25 Help

Both plugs are sparking fine, and slightly moist w/ gas. Guess they are both firing. I disconnected the blk/green wire as you said, and still started and ran, but don't know about full throttle, I'll need more than my garden hose for that. The prop is not slipping, I can almost turn the engine over by hand. How about the H speed jet? Could it be partially clogged after a couple years of storage? I thought if it ran at all above an Idle, the carb was mostly clean, but maybe it need cleaning? How bout piston/rings. It is fairly easy to start, maybe lost compression? I know it's not a hard to pull as my 77' 9.9, but thought maybe was designed that way. Any more sugestions??

Re: Mercury 25 Help

It could have a dirty high speed and could be low on compression so you will need to ck compression with a guage and also ck the carb

Decarb? Cleaning carbon I assume...How? Can I check the compression by pull? I don't have a guage, appx how hard should it be to pull? If I do have bad rings, could that cause it to run rough? Would it run at all?

Thanks. I have some sea foam in the gas now, was wondering why it was smoking so much, I'll soak the pistons and add more to the gas. Maybe i'll get lucky and get better compression and more power. Thanks again

Hi,

I reckon it is losing compression. I would buy a guage of ebay, they are always useful. Shouldn't be too easy to pull over either.

latest problem, see pics

latest problem, see pics

motor still runs, but not like it should. I still need to check compression, but have not. It seems to be ok after soaking in sea foam, maybe that helped.
So here's what I found behind the carb. Should I clean as best as I can? I don't want to tear too far into the motor, any help would be great. I'll be sure to clean the carb while it's off. If the H speed jet is clogged, would the motor run at all above a idle?

Re: Mercury 25 Help

pics may not have worked...there is a plate behind the carb (88' merc 25) that has three flaps per side. the flaps have rust on them. What's this piece called? I will need at least new gasket not that I ruined the old one. Let me know what to do with this piece please. I'm off to clean out the carb and see how bad it is!

Re: Mercury 25 Help

those are the reed valves better remove and replace them, if they break you are going to damage a piston, they are probably stuck shut now.
