hi, i am trying to remove the prop because it is bent on my johnson 15hp outboard, not sure what year it is but the silver coin on the block reads: G304050. the model number is long gone of the engine. when i removed the prop the last section of the prop stays on the shaft. it is the part with the rubber washer inset. the reason i know it is present is that i have another johnson with a similiar prop and when i removed it the entire prop housing came off. on this one it looks to be stuck on the shaft. how can i remove this and does anyone know why it didnt come off with prop? when i look at the complete prop housing that peice seems to be welded to the prop. please help....

Re: Johnson Prop question 15 hp outboard

Does the exhaust come out through the hollow prop? No matter, that just helps date it. Unless it is an antique, the prop hub is pressed and spun into the propeller itself. You should not have been able to pull it out unless you pulled awfully hard or it was shot anyway.

The challenge now is to limit your losses. Cut as much of the rubber off the hub as you can, then heat the hub to expand it enough to get it off. I assume that you have propeller repair places there in HI that can re-hub the prop?

It is stuck because of lack of preventative maintenance. You are suposed to take it off periodically and clean it and put some waterproof marine grease on the shaft to keep it from corroding on.

If you buy a new prop, try to get one with a bronze hub, not aluminum. The aluminum ones are terrible about corroding on, especially in salt water.

Instead of heating it which might damage the seals, you might want to use a disc grinder to split it in half.

the part that is stuck to the shaft has a metal housing and the rubber washer is inside that. will it still operate properly if i just place the prop back on for now?

Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about from that description. Maybe somebody else here will?
