Re: 1985 Merc 115? falls on its butt

......My 84 115 hated pulling skiers. It would be running great, plenty of grunt, hook the ski rope to the pylon... BOG. Unhook the rope, ran like a charm

Ouch... that's exactly what I want my '84 115 for....I hope I make out better than you :)

just a thought.... I have a 86 90hp that had all the same symptoms you describe. I chased the fuel all over.... rebuilt carbs.... set float levels... rebuilt fuel pump and checked compression.... I ended up finding a corroded wire coming from the stator and bought a tester... checked that and replaced it.solved my problem. The motor would only run about 2000 rpm... started well but would not go over 2000. sounded just like it was starving for fuel....
This might not be your problem but it sure was mine. btw.... I was able to find that answer here when someone suggested to check it......that was last summer... this sure is a good forum ...lots of help. If you find that you need a stator I think I still have an email address from somone that gave me a great price on a new one.... I think it was around 119.00....
good luck to you

jimmbo,
your 115 was still just a touch too lean on the idle mixture screws

lightly loaded it will accelerate great but bog under heavier load, pulling up a skier or even my broad butt on board.

Nah... it was just lazy. I traded it 9 yrs ago... for a FICHT. now there was a trouble free motor.
