You'd need to remove the 85 and mount a 140. Totally different powerheads.

Welcome to iboats, start from the beinging. there are many 85's and 140's out there, year, model #s. there always major problems swapping parts around, carb, reeds, exhaust housings, gear ratios. heres a link, where you can follow the prompts to each engine and compare parts. it's usually not financially cost worthy. http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/

hello, the 85 is 1980 and the 140 is a 1983.looking at both power heads they look the same.If i change the carbs and reed valve block and the exhaust system would it increase my HP or just waste my fuel?

Why not just hang the 140 hp on the back ???

All you see is what's on the outside. Everything inside is completely different. Okay, same crank and rods, maybe. But different pistons, different cylinder porting, more.

the 140 engine is no good, big end went on it and the piston is no good, thats why i was going ti change the parts over to make my 85 a little more powerful.i was under the impresion that just changing the parts i said would work well

I'm thinking that if you swapped the parts you mention, it might become close to a 115. But not nearly a 140.

Re: Johnson V4 85hp To 140hp

If he guts the 85, has it ported like the 140. Then transfers the carbs, throttle linkage, reeds, intake manifold, and the cylinder heads. The bubbleback exhaust housing from the 140 will have to be used. To use the internal exhuast stuffers will require some machining. Once all that is done the 85 is a 140. Also the exhaust tuner from the 140 needs to be used.

lookig at the parts lists all the engine parts are the same so it should up the power without any major probs, would the gear ratio`s be the same or should i change the leg as well

Re: Johnson V4 85hp To 140hp

The powerheads are completely different. The intake and exhaust ports on the 140 are HUGE compared to those on the 85. You would have to completly disassemble the 85, have it machined, etc. to match the 140 specs and then you'd have it as a 140. If you're going to go that far, you might as well just rebuild the 140.

The exhaust tuner is part of the whole exhaust manifold. If you look at the 85hp, between the cylinder banks, you'll see that it is flat. The 140 in the same area, is bulged outwards. It's often referred to as the bubble back. It helps in the breathing of the motor. The bigger carbs feeding more fuel make more exhaust. That exhaust has to get out somehow, and the tuner helps scavenge that.

More often than not, unless you REALLY know what you're doing and are willing to read plugs, incrementally change jets, read plugs again, change jets again, etc. in order to get the motor to really run right, simply bolting parts on will probably result in poorer performance, more fuel usage, and decreased engine life.

Hardly seems worth the $$$$$
Probably worth looking for a bigger motor instead........unless you want to say "I did it" !!!!

Re: Johnson V4 85hp To 140hp

The exhaust tuner is located in the midsection of the motor, below the powerhead.

The online parts list at BRP web site are not always correct.
