Re: New to me boat is coming along

Went and got tags and registration today. Was going to put the prop on but the thrust washer off the old lower is too small. The new lower has a different taper to it..
after some research on the BRP site i found the part number changed in 1987.So guess the new thrust washer is just a tiny bit larger. Same splines and all but the taper is longer on the new lower..The prop slides right on without the washer. The guy i bought the lower from said he would find me the right one.....So,i guess it will be the end of next week when i get back from Texas before i splash it:rolleyes:
Plus i'm picking up my 4 new trailer tires tomorrow..those are free.It pays to save those hotel reward points..:D

yep,so far so good.It has been a lot of work but its starting to pay off.
I got the hull pretty clean but it still needs about 2 more times with the hull cleaner and scrub pad.My back is killing me..:p
The teak trim cleaned up nice with the deck and wood cleaner. Now i got to sand it down some and start the teak oil coating. I found a detail guy that quoted 200 bucks to buff the whole boat...i'm tempted to let him do it..

Terrific. I gotta commend you for layin low on the deal and then ending up with a better price. Not easy to do when you get the bug.

Enjoy

Wow big difference on that hull!

What cleaner ended up doing the trick?

How hard is it to focus on work, knowing that your new boat is sitting at home DRY???

Re: New to me boat is coming along

From SeaRayman13 on ebay that sells all the service manuals.I have sent so many people his way he gave me a good deal on the rebuilt lower,450 including shipping. He is a great guy and is thinking about moving to NC so i email him from time to time when i see land and homes for sale he may be interested in. It pays to have friends. Tashasdaddy is a great help also!

Super job. I know you are tickled about the whole deal. I know you put another lower unit on, regardless, you'd never know it was the same engine.

Re: New to me boat is coming along

Thanks Mark,The mid section looked really bad also but after taking the wire brush to it and getting it down to bare metal, then sanding the heck out of it,i used JB weld to fill some small pit holes. Then sanded that all smooth.2 coats of primer then 3 coats of paint. I have some Johnson factory paint ordered to put another coat on then paint the hood and new decals..The paint i used is just a shade lighter but i wanted to go ahead and get a good sealer coat on it.
I'm still trying to get the right thrust washer for the prop. The old one is too small.i think this lower is a 91 or 92 model and the taper on the propshaft is different..I got one coming in the mail but not sure if its the right one or not.I may end up towing it to a dealer to have them find the right one.

Re: New to me boat is coming along

Just a note on painting. I'm not a pro but a pieve of mine is to paint an engine and have the paint wear off in places.

Two solutions work. 1. Insure paint is thouroughly dry and include a hardner if possible in the top coat.

2. Use a two part epoxy paint if possible.

I like your idea about taking it to a dealer if all else fails. The resident mechanic can probably go to the parts bin and have you a washer in a heartbeat just looking at the thing.

Great project. I'm happy for you.

Re: New to me boat is coming along

I can't wait for the shakedown cruise. It runs great on the muffs but i'm sure i'll find issues once in the water. I still need to drain the fuel tank and check it out.I know the fuel in it is at least a couple years old.I'm surprised it even runs on it.The fuel guage reads almost empty.
The good thing is 6 screws and the hatch that covers the tank is out.

That is good news. I just replaced my 60 gallon tank. It was under the Center Console; I had quite an interesting setup going on during the replacement process!
