Monday moring I show up at my shop. As usual there were small appliances that needed repair. On one of my carts was a bun toaster. No notes or a description of its problem. I did notice that the two end panels were smashed in. These toasters are made of stainless and are durable. I kept looking at these dents and thinking that these were done with a fist.
I went on and took the toaster apart. Inside the unit, I found that both electronic relays were shorted and had burned. I took off the other end panel and found that the panel shorted out the heater platen. I kept thinking that with the number of toasters I've repaired, I have never seen this type of damage.
I called my boss and told him. He said I watch too much CSI and that nobody could punch in the side of a toaster. I told him that the manager knew about when it happened. The boss wasn't too happy because now he has to go look through footage of the video.
Later that afternoon he calls me and said I was right. In the video, the kid looks around and then punches the toaster. Immediately sparks went flying with lots of smoke. The kids response was, "I don't know what happened". All the other teen employees said they didn't see anything. ......That was until the video was shown. Then everyone came forward that saw him do it.
They fired him on the spot and plan to make him pay for the damages. I feel bad because I caused someone to loose their job, but it was his choice to vandalize the equipment.
