Monday moring I show up at my shop. As usual there were small appliances that needed repair. On one of my carts was a bun toaster. No notes or a description of its problem. I did notice that the two end panels were smashed in. These toasters are made of stainless and are durable. I kept looking at these dents and thinking that these were done with a fist.

I went on and took the toaster apart. Inside the unit, I found that both electronic relays were shorted and had burned. I took off the other end panel and found that the panel shorted out the heater platen. I kept thinking that with the number of toasters I've repaired, I have never seen this type of damage.

I called my boss and told him. He said I watch too much CSI and that nobody could punch in the side of a toaster. I told him that the manager knew about when it happened. The boss wasn't too happy because now he has to go look through footage of the video.

Later that afternoon he calls me and said I was right. In the video, the kid looks around and then punches the toaster. Immediately sparks went flying with lots of smoke. The kids response was, "I don't know what happened". All the other teen employees said they didn't see anything. ......That was until the video was shown. Then everyone came forward that saw him do it.

They fired him on the spot and plan to make him pay for the damages. I feel bad because I caused someone to loose their job, but it was his choice to vandalize the equipment.

They didn't fire him over some stupid toaster. They fired him for lying. BIG difference! Those that saw it and lied about it too are probably on thin ice themselves. Not Your Fault!

You did what you had to do ... maybe this teenager will learn a lesson and take better care of his employers things on his next job. Or, maybe not. But he stands a better chance now that he knows his actions have consequences

SS, the kid should thank you for teaching him something his parents should have.:D

Course you may have just taught him to be more careful next time, and to check for video surveillance equipment.:rolleyes:

Re: Dumb Teenager

About a year ago, the security camera system was updated. There is a camera that covers just about everywhere except the bathrooms. (Unless some pervert installed his own)

It was to reduce the alleged slip and fall lawsuits. We are now finding out it helps in finding who is damaging the equipment and picking their nose......ewwweeeee

I got to look at it this way,,,,,if it wasn't for dumb teens,,there would be less job security for me.

Re: Dumb Teenager

Some things have to be learned the hard way. I had a boat slip off the ball of the yard jeep back in one of my early jobs. I was unaware it damaged the boat and the damage wasn't bad. But I lied about it and got canned. I like to think I grew a little from that experience. Had the teen come clean about the incident, he'd have gotten 3 days off without pay. But lieing is a character issue and the employer was probably right to fire him. He learned a valuable lesson at a good time in his life to learn it. Two lessons actually. The other about keeping your cool and not taking anger or frustration out on something (or somebody) else. So you gave him a two-for-one deal.

That would be quite a commute, bassboy1.
I don't think you would like the uniform.

How fast does your bike go?

Re: Dumb Teenager

There are child labor laws. Aren't you like 13?
14 as of march 15. I used to referee soccer for my church league. (had a couple hundred kids. Took 6 hours a week for the games. That was with 3 games playing at once. 18 in a day.) I could usually average 4 and got paid 15 bucks a game :D, but now, they just hire trained refs. That is what paid for the 12 foot boat. Right now, I do whatever jobs I can get for people. My boy scout troop sells pinestraw as a fundraiser and customers often pay me to spread it for them. And, I do anything people will pay me for. Digging holes for bushes, picking up limbs after they clear cut a bit of woods for a friends horse pasture. Occasionally more involved jobs such as digging post holes for fences with those goshawful post hole augers. As a legal job I couldn't do it, but I am just "helping out." Dad is fine with it. I was raised on a farm (lived in a barn too) so I know what I am doin'.
Some weeks I can make 200 bucks, then would go 5 or six months, and only make about 50 in the whole time. Just depends on who I can get to pay me for what. I take ANYTHING people will pay me for.
