Others need to answer this, hold on until they come in, but it seems that your techs blame everything on you, instead of having any knowledge.

The Ring Gear is What you Need,..... Not a Complete Flywheel.......
You can Buy 1 at Any Auto Parts Store,..... Chevy only uses 2 diferent 1s... The 14" you need,+ a 12".......

The Ring Gear is driven Off with a Punch,+ the New Ring Gear is Heated in an Oven to about 400*,+ Dropped onto the cold Flywheel..........

Then the Flywheel Assembley is reinstalled on the motor........

bondo vcan it be more simple as you confused me and this mechanic and shop owner was confused at hello...
i told the one mechanic 5 months is a crime. he said he seen longer times . i said what country was that in north pole..i had to stop because he was only a mechanic and not the owner. and to stupid to understand that a longblock swap dont take 5 months with a small amount of xtra work. he seems to think 1.84 gears ok too....waste of fresh air

Those ring gears don't even have to go in an oven. I use an oxy/act torch and evenly heat around the ring gear till it gets around 400 to 500 degrees. (you could even use a propane torch if you have plenty of time) It's not an exact science, then quickly pick it up and drop it over the flywheel till it sits on the lip and let it cool.
I suspect even YOUR mechanic could do it, but from what I have heard so far, I wouldn't put money on it.

Wow Bob...I feel bad for you...these guys have really given you the runaround. I feel the same way Don does about their competence regarding the ring gear. What a nightmare...I look forward to the day you report that you're back on the water...hang in there...

Better yet, have them remove the flywheel, you pick it up, take it home, install the new ring gear, then take it back to them and tell them to put it on and don't screw it up again or your attorney will be the next thing (after the flywheel) that you bring back to their shop.

don that makes a lot of sense. but i just want it out of there . the shop is 15 miles from home i have lost big $$$ in gas and time..i am going to call him in the am and ask him does he know about changing just the ring. if he says no. my next question will be if i bring you a complete flywheel when will i get the boat back if he says sat. then i will buy one. if he says next week. i will tell him i got a pro guy who will install the ring after he gives me the flywheel.

You know, judging from what you've said about this shop, I have one question. Did yu actually go over and hear this "noise" for yourself, or are you taking their (in my mind questionable) word for it? If you didn't hear it yourself, might this not be just another run-around? Just my cynical 2 cents

Re: major help needed 5.7 89 flywheel broke

Get the flywheel, if you are unsure how to replace the ring gear I would take it to a machine shop to install. Then take it to the dude to install it onto your motor. I would not trust this shop you are using to install a new ring gear onto your flywheel. Sounds like they would even mess that up.

Good luck

Rob.

Re: major help needed 5.7 89 flywheel broke

Well Bob I'm sorry but I have to throw this in but, I can't say I've seen a ring gear fail that was not caused by another underlying problem. Possibly hydrolocked engine, starter left loose or installed incorrectly, faulty starter, or outdrive locked up. If it spit teeth out there is a reason for it. :(
