Hello Can anybody tell me how to disconnect the shifting linkage to remove my lower unit on a 1959 5.5 hp evinrude. I am going to get a service manual but I kinda wanted to get started and replace my impeller. Any help is appreciated. I have done these before but this moter is different and I am not sure if I need to remove the power head or not.
Thanks

I have a '59 5.5hp. Although most of the parts are sitting in a box! You need to remove the powerhead to get to the linkage which is below it. There is no other way. The powerhead removal is not that hard. 5 or 6 screws from the bottom. It's a good ideas to replace the base hasket when you do as I didn't on my '61 5.5 and it now leaks! They're only a few $$$. Once the powerhead is off, there's just 2 little nuts to remove and then the LU drops off :)

Where are these 5 or 6 nuts located? Around the bottom perimeter where the shaft attaches to the motor assembly?

They are actually screws and come up from below, securing the powerhead to the midsection. Actually, as I remember there are 7 of them, but I could be off.

Please, don't ignore the lower main bearing carbon seal assembly which you will be taking apart. Put in a new 303355 gasket and 303347 oring. These parts are vital for keeping water out of the crankcase.

Good advice FR, the seal is on the top of the driveshaft and looks harmless but is very important.

Well then can I ask you guys another question? I have a 1956 5.5 Johnson that I need to change the impellor on also. Is this going to be the same deal?
Thanks
Matt
