I am attempting to remove and repair/replace the lower unit on my outboard. I removed the four bolts, found the smaller shafter with the pin and cotter key and removed that, but the unit still will not slip off.

What am I missing?

On my '81 75 hp there is a screw behind the exhaust snout that needed to be removed. I am new to this whole boating thing but i hope that helps you. If not someone here will know.

It almost looks like I just needed to "force" the unit a little more, but I am not sure.

That looks like a standard Chrylser type of LU. If you have removed the four bolts that are above the cavitation plate, and disconnected the shift linkage the LU should be able to come out. Now, some taping with wooden block or rubber mallet is ok. The drive shaft runs up into the engine and it could be stuck. You might want to reinstall the bolts loosely so as you are working the LU doesn't fall out..

You might read this.. This is talking about an OMC, but there are many similarities.. http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/06/columns/max/index7.htm
