this question is for my fathers investment. 1991 thompson just bought this winter. runs great however just noticed with the muffs on(on the trailer) the boat runs nice and quiet. as soon as i put in in gear still queit..... rev the rpms up to about 1800 in gear and all of a sudden a loud rattle in the outdrive. only happens in gear when i raise the rpm's. the oil is full. the motor was changed this winter. is there a quick fix for this. he is supposed to be splashing this boat tomorrow....

Did Thompson only make 1 type boat in 91?????
Besides that, it doesn't matter what type boat you have, what kind of drive is it. Make, Model, etc.

Re: outdrive noise cant understand

Is the noise coming from the lower unit? Or the upper? Perhaps from the ujoint area?????
Can't say if it's a quick fix or not, till we know what the problem is.
Did you try raising the RPM up while in neutral?

The ujoints and everything in the upper gear box, and the vertical shaft in the lower all turns whenever the engine is running.
My guess is you have a chipped tooth on a gear in the lower unit.
Time to pull the lower apart and inspect the gears.

Does the noise change if you turn the drive left or right? Trimming up or down?
If it does, that would indicate ujoints. Could also be a bad gear in the upper.
Did you pull the drain plug on the drive and check for metal on the drain plug magnet?
