How difficult to rebuild pre-alpha drive?

I've got a Mercruiser 888 that tore up the upper gears and is in need of a rebuild. My question is, how hard is it to do? I've rebuilt truck axles (including gear setup) automatic transmissions, transfer cases and have even rebuilt engines so I've got some skills but is there something outside of these skills that would be required? I'm sure that there are special tools required but how confident should I be from a skills perspective that I can do this?

If you tore up the gears in the upper, the gears and bearings in the lower are also damaged. There are a LOT of special tool requied for setting gear heights and such, and they cost a lot of money. Plus the cost of the gears and bearings, you would be better off just getting a new SEI drive with a warranty. It would be cheaper than the tools and parts to fix your old one.
