So i got up at 530 to head out to the ct river for the first time in my new boat. i guess i picked the wrong place to launch, i launched the boat, everything was kosher, got about 10 ft from shore when i realized how shallow it was, i figured it must be deeper in the middle, so i get out to the middle, nope even shallower! i could probably walk across it but the current was real strong, since it was so shallow i couldnt put my prop down and ended up drifting even farther down the river, (i launched in enfield on parson st by king island) i ended up drifting down to the 1st bridge, i knew that if i kept going i would get stuck under the bridge, by this time i was panicing, it took me about 2hrs to get back up to the launch 1/2 mile north, and caused mayham on my lower unit, im just happy to be back on shore, definately one of the most horrible things ive experience, but once back on shore a friendly gentleman told me id have better luck launching down by east hartford where its alot deeper, all in all, not too bad of damage, just need to get a new prop and some welding done, the case didnt crack(no water in gear oil) so lucky for that, but heres pics of the aftermath

You should really buy some CHARTS it will let you study ahead of time about shallow water and rocky areas

LOL

Wow. My prop looks like that, but from a years use, not one day :D

A depth finder works great in rivers. Let's you stay right in the channel, and gives you warning before it get's TOO shallow.

Also I don't have one yet, but I'd like to get one of these skeg protectors.
This one is found in cabelas catalog.

They bolt right on, and go from about 90-120 depending on the size of the engine, and where ya get it.

Well, this is surely an attaboy for having an alum prop (vs SS).

I have had similar problems, although not near as much damage. Was in unfamiliar water, a canal in southern Louisiana and it had channel markers, but I just thought they were for the oil well support boats.....wrong. Get outside the buoys and the bottom is right under the surface.
