Re: Shift interrupt switch

Look at page 1C-44 the pictures show how the switch mounts and the wires go on the little terminal block in your photos. Especially picture #50499

You also need manual #7 for your engine. It includes all the wiring diagrams.

Are those pages in manual 7 ? If so, could you send me the link?

Thanks.

Okay, I saw the pics in #50499 I can do that, all I need to know is: can I hook up "B" wires straight to the coil? and "A" wire to ground--where?

No, the pictures are in manual #6, the wiring diagrams are in #7 and it's not online.

This is what I was referring to: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6C1R3.PDF

After I connect to the terminal block, do i then connect B to the coil or where? And A to ground exactly where?

Thank you for all your help--I am learning--I just don't want to screw something up!

Do you have points type ignition, or the Thunderbolt IV sytem?

No points, I'm thinking I've got the Thunderbolt IV.

The motor was rebuilt around 4 years ago--so I was told.

Thanks, Don. Got home late tonight, I'll check my distributor tomorrow hopefully mine has those places to connect the wires to. What gauge wire do I need to use?

Dang Don,

Way to go!

I was reading this thread like a suspense novel. I just knew someone was going to come through with a diagram.:D

How did you get the diagram down to the iboats size limit?

I don't use iboats to upload files. In this case I used photobucket.com and just posted the image.
Eventually when I get my own web space set up I won't even have to use photobucket, but I can't seem to get mine to work yet, and really don't have the time to mess with it yet.

Don't have a clue what you have. Never seen one with red and black wires.
Got any pictures? Who knows, you may not even have a Merc ignition system.

I'll try and post pics, my guess is they used whatever color wires they had available when it was rebuilt.

That's when it's time to either trace each wire out, tag it and know what it goes to, get a new harness, or make your own. It's up to you, I can't see it or guess what goes to what when it has been owner modified.

Yep, just as I thought, you don't have a Thunderbolt ignition. Some previous owner changed it to the Prestolite BID distributor. Was never used by Merc.
The red wire goes to the + and the black goes to the -.
Not sure how to wire it to a shift interrupt switch. Let me do some searching.

Just to make sure, could you take a picture of the inside of the distributor. Just pull the cap and take a pic. Doesn't have to be super close, would rather see the whole distributor and coil in it.

Thank you Don, I would very much appreciate if you are able to figure this out for me, as I would really like to have my switch hooked up.

I did purchase a Quicksilver rotor and cap kit (Thunderbolt) # 815407Q 5
will this NOT work on my unit? If not, can you tell me what I need as I want to replace the cap and rotor.
