Here is another freebee. Registration says 1984 15' Olympian boat. Came with 1958 Johnson V4 50HP outboard, and the frame and rollers from the old trailer.

In one of the photos you see an old Johnson trailer (from another freebee that hit the dump) that I am going to transfer the rollers over to.

I also have a 1973 Johnson 115HP V4 that I'm goiong to stick on as long as the transom is solid.

I'm just going to slap some seats in it, polish up the blue gelcoat, get it running good, and seel it for a new interior in my bayliner.

It has a decent top that needs cleaned and even came with clear side curtains in great shape.

115 is going to be too much for that boat. nice find.

I agree with TD. A 115HP motor will cause that boat to break up when it hits it's first wave. That Fat-Fifty will push it 25-30 MPH, and use a lot of gas doing it!

What do you mean by break up when it hits it's first wave.

As far as weight, they are both V4 motors probably within 25 lbs of each other.

I could still use the fat fifty, so here I am getting ideas and feedback.

nice hobby to much headache for me. ive been down that road but if you get your money back for time and parts.. its all worth it. fix about 10 boats like that sell for a good profit. soon youll be in a new boat..thats my way of thinking.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

Got a manual for the fat fifty on the way. I will tune it up while on this boat and see how it does. Then I will either sell the fat fifty and mount the 115, or keep the fat fifty mounted and sell the 115.

I don't really care either way as it's all going to be sold anyway.

I just don't see anyone paying much for a boat with such an old motor, but then I doubt I could get much for the old motor alone, maybe just part it out?

James, No offense but that boat INHO does not look like it should have been rated for 80 HP, when it was new. It is clearly not new now, and putting a 115HP motor on it would tear it apart, IMHO.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

I wonder how it ended up with such an old motor in the first place?
I had a trihull similar to that with a 110 on it, it was way too much motor. It barely floated with three people on board, and it eventually started to destroy the transom and rear of the hull. I swapped it out for a good 65HP 3 cylinder and it was fine till the day I sold it.
Those were mostly just built as lake and river boats, they didn't need much power to move along. An at higher speeds they ride too rough anyhow if there's any chop.
Value wise, if you get it running as a complete package with the trailer, all ready to run, it will sell. I wouldn't expect much more than say $1200 or so at best. People just don't chase after trihulls like they do the sportier V hulls.
Myself, for fishing, I prefer them, they are super stable, take less motor to push, usually are pretty light, and carry more weight than a comparable V hull in most cases. Forget them in rough water though, they will jar your teeth out.

I looked at the boat again. It has a somewhat thin transom. I'm going to leave the 50HP on there and get it tuned up and running good. If I'm happy with the performance I will leave it.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

Good idea!

I have been there and done that will small older boats (put rediculous large engines on them). The weight is one issue, but the bigger issue is that the after structure of the boat isn't designed for that much power. It won't take long to start seeing cracks. This assumes that the transom is sound in the first place.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

several years ago i got a 16' Glasstron, that came along with a merc 1350. this motor had been on the boat. which was probably rated for a 75. after the first 3 miles of towing. i pulled in to a mechanics show, and pull the motor off the boat, or i would have left it in the road. the transom was solid just not built for the big motor.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

TD - the two main issues I'm dealing with are weight on the transom, and stress on the transom from operation of a high power motor.

You are talking about simple weight on the transom. Did the 1350 have a support going from the lower unit to the trailer for transport support?

The 50HP on my boat is 255 - 265 lbs. Your 1350 is maybe 20 or 30 lbs heavier. No big deal there. It would however exert a lot more stress on the transom in operation though.

I am looking at what I think is a 1960's 55HP evinrude(3-cyl?).

This might weight less and be a good power match.

Neat looking old boat. It really favors a 70's MFG.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

I can't dig up any info on this boat. Emblems say 'Olympian', registration says 1984 . . . . any idea of a parent company or manufacturer.

Boat is from the pacific northwest.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

yes the 1350 had the transom saver, but the engine had put so much pressure on the transom. those tall inline sixes were heck on a transom.

what a nice boat. a little tlc and perhaps a newer motor and this would be a sweet ride.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

Does the boat have the old 2 cable type steering? I believe the boat is late 60's early 70's model. I junked a glastron the hull looked just like that boat's hull but mine was a fishing boat. I could be wrong about the year, and it might be older.

Re: NEW PROJECT: Ever see this type of boat?

The boat is registered as a 1984 model. It has a teleflex style single cable for steering. Since it was refitted with an old 1958 motor, it has a transom mounted linkage in lieu of the tilt tube attachment.

The hull also has a more plastic appearance and the condition leads me to believe that it most likely is a 1984 model.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome!

I know I will get corrected by everone, but that boat looks like a old lund, I know everyone is saying to themselfs right now, that lund boats are alum. but like starcraft, they did make some fiberglass ones, and that looks like the 15ftlund that I restored years ago:)
