I have a 1973 (I believe) Ted Williams 7.5 HP motor, model 217-58881. The motor has not ran in over ten years. I decided to try and get it running recently, surprisingly it fired rite up only to die once the bowl ran out of fuel. I decided to read some of the threads posted on this forum and shore enough the fuel element was broken. I have cleaned the carb, replaced the carb gasket, as well as the gasket behind the small fuel plate on the carb and finally the small element itself. Unfortuneatley, once everything was put back together, the motor runs excellent, but it still wont suck fuel into the bowl. I had put a clear fuel line on the carb so that I can see what is going on. I can keep the motor running if I prime the fuel line once I see the fuel level drop, but it wont pull fuel into the bowl. I am stuck scratching my head on this one. If anyone has any idea on what to do, PLEASE HELP!!!

Re: 7.5 Ted Williams (Please Help!)

Couple of things could be wrong. First, the bladder is supposed to go into its hole in the carb, with the slot at a 45-degree angle. If not, it won't pump properly.

Second, on the fuel intake, there is a small flexible goodie under the plate that has two flapper valves cut into it. They're critical to the pump's function. If those are damaged or curled, the pump will not work properly. The unit has notches in it, so it can't really be installed in the wrong direction.

Other problems can be an air leak anywhere upstream of the fuel inlet, A tank that is too low (that little bladder can't lift fuel very far), or some sort of blockage in any part of the fuel system.

I do have the pump element at a 45 degree angle, but I dont have the two flaps under the fuel intake. Unforetuneatley, I was told that there is no replacement part for that gasket under the fuel plate. So since the original was damaged, I made a new one with gasket material. I was able to get an exact template of the holes and cutouts necessary, but not the two flaps. I am assuming after reading your post that that is the culprit. I am able to try and make a new gasket replicating those two flaps by reviewing the diagram on www3.sears.com. Do you feel that will work or do you think that the gasket material is not flexible enough to even bother?? Thanks for your input!

Go to certifiedpartscorp.com, and call the number you find there. They have those flapper valve thingies, along with most other parts for your outboard. You won't find the parts lists on their site, but if you call, they'll get send 'em to you.

They can also make up up a complete carb kit for that engine.

You'll need the model number of your outboard.

That's why it's not working. Those little flappers are check valves, letting fuel in one hole and blocking it on the other.

If you can't wait, you might be able to get one from a small engine repair shop. Those valves are used on countless engines. Take your carburetor with you, so they can see it.

I doubt you'd be able to make this part, the material is rather unusual, and I've never seen it.

By the way, if you go to the Sears site you mentioned, you can get the actual part number for that valve. That will help when you call certifiedpartscorp
