Re: trailer lights

Do them the wrong way around and you will soon know when you check them out !!!!
Make sure the ground is good.

Re: trailer lights

do yourself a real favor and run the ground wire all the way to the lights. don't depend on the trailer frame for the ground.

Re: trailer lights

I ran a ground wire all the way back also and solved all my grounding problems for years. Still have to do it to my current trailer.

Yeap. Run the ground wire to the lights. I initially ground to the frame and guess what? the light did not work. Had to redo the wiring again and this time to the lights and now it works like a charm. Lesson learned.

If you need to run a ground to all your trailer lights, you aren't doing a good job grounding your lights and/or ground coming onto the trailer. 99% of trailer manufacturers do not run secondary ground wires. You are adding complexity by adding an extra crimp connection at every light...extra complexity means more chance of failure down the road.

Re: trailer lights

Okay, this answered the very question that I joined the forum for. However, I still have two wires that remain unsolved????? a blue one and another brown one. Do the two brown ones go together and connect to "tail" slot cause on the diagram it does not look that way. My truck plug has 4 wires the boat plug had 4 wires before the dogs chewed them off, now i am confused because I have six wires coming from the trailer and dont know where they go!!! OYE

The blue wire is usually for electric trailer brakes .The other one ( are you sure it's brown, not black ?) could be for a backup light.

Re: trailer lights

Can you guys explain how to run a separate ground wire for trailer lights ? Does this mean you connect a ground wire to the green, yellow, and brown wires then ground them with the white wire on the trailer plug or what ? I'm having a ground problem too. The vehicle ground is good and all the lights on it work like they should. . I have the trailer hooked to the vehicle while testing the lights. On the trailer I'm getting a dim right turn signal and no running lights. :confused:Brakes and left turn work good. The ground wire on the trailer is clean and tight. All the bulbs are the right ones as far as I know. This is a Genesis galvanized trailer.

Re: trailer lights

What I say below will seem elementary, but it will help you troubleshoot if you understand exactly how the trailer lights are setup:

Typically, there are 3 types of lights: 1) tail light 2) brake light and 3) turn signal light (left and right).

Each light needs 2 wires (positive and negative (ground)) to work. Usually, the ground wire is the trailer--the white (ground) wire is tied to the front of the trailer and then each light kit ties it's ground to the bolt that you use to mount it to the trailer, thus, using the trailer as the ground wire extension. You can just run a 2 physical white wires from the front of the trailer to both sides (left and right) if you want. So...in the front of the trailer, the two white wires would be attached to the single white wire on the wiring harness in the front. However, you still need to attach this white (gnd) wire to each light kit. Some light kits provide you with a white wire sticking out the back, but some internally connect this white wire to the bolt (so it's difficult for you to access it). You need to check your light kits and see what type you have in order to determine if you want to run a ground wire or use the trailer as the ground wire.

The next handy thing to know is that the turn signal is the same as the break signal except your vehicle's electronics make it turn on and off. So, the turn signal is just turning the break signal on and off repeatedly. That is why you only need a two wires (brown wire for tail light) and either a yellow or green wire (for brake and turn signal). I am not counting the (gnd wire) because you need that for all lights.

Also, do not connect the white wire to any other colored wires such as green, yellow or brown. This will short out the circuit.

One more thing, I suggest switching to LED lights because you will not have to replace bulbs and worry about them busting or burning out. But...they cost a lot more.

Hope this helps and sorry if it is too elementary. :D

Green to Green
Brown to Brown
Yellow to Yellow

For the White - instead of tying into the frame, take a run of wire from the tounge all the way to the light (a single piece of multistrand insulated wire - i.e. 1 side of speaker wire if you have to) and connect. Remember to do both sides of the trailer lights with the ground

Re: trailer lights

When ever I get a new to me trailer I always replace the lights and wiring with new unless they all work. I use the wiring diagram used by Nova II 260. I only run a ground ( white wire ) as a temp check to the light that is giving me trouble I agree with bruceb58. about not adding another connection to worry about. KISS (keep it simple stupid) The stupid part strikes home in my shop alot

The Blue can also be for lockout of surge brakes can it not. I have one on my 5 pin trailer harness and I do not have elec. brakes.

My trailer is wired exactly this way as well. I did tap into the trailer side ground and make a lead that can be cliped right to my trailer hitch.
