Convert Suzuki 90 to 115?

Has anybody attempted to convert the Suzuki 90hp 4-stroke to 115hp output? I'm fairly certain that all the specs are the same, I'm not sure where the difference in power is made, maybe in the ECU or rev-limiter? Does anybody know if this is possible?

Thanks,
Adam

And a $5,000 fine if you get caught doing it. 2nd time is 10 grand, 3rd time is jail.

could you please explain that?

Thats like saying you can't change the carb, cam, or put headers on a car to change the performance, as long as his boat is rated for 115hp or more he would be just fine.

The Evinrude/johnson website lists all the parts for the Johnson version of these engine. Just compare them and see what part numbers are different between the 2.

I strongly disagree !!! Those EPA fines are only if you remove the emission controls. If you convert the engine over with the OEM cams and ECU from a 115, then it will still meet emissions and still be legal with the EPA.

Nope! It started life as a 90 and it must meet emission standards of a 90 forever.

I still respectfully disagree !!! Over 32 years as a Service manager for autos, motorcycles and boats tells me differently. I am fully aware of the EPA standards and fines, believe me. If what you claim were the case, then nobody could modify anything, and that just ain't so ! That's why California approves high performance parts for autos and motorcycles (CARB). As long as they meet the emission standards, they are good to go.People are still modding snowmobiles, motorcycles, cars, and yes, outboards. If that were the case, then you couldn't put a 150 hp nitrous kit on a car because it originally had to meet 350 hp standards.

Show me in writing, then I'll believe it !!

One last thing, when's the last time someone checked the emissions on your outboard ????

I also disagree ..... i've seen GRID's post over time and most of them are in no context of what was asked or made any sense ......

I guess if you feel like modifying your engine to max of your ability, you can do it, you bought it so it is your property to do with it whatever you want .......

Camshaft and ECU, I'm sure that wouldn't be cheap, but it makes sense that it's only timing and electrical.

I have huge doubts about being arrested or fined for modifying an outboard engine. You probably work for Suzuki or something. I've been modifying Kawasaki and Yamaha stand-up jet skis for years, raising compression, porting cylinders, running different pipes, bigger carbs, etc. and there is absolutely nothing illegal about that. You can also swap stock Yamaha parts between their similar engines and go from a 50hp 650cc to a 64 hp 701cc very easily. Nothing illegal there.

Anyways, I will look up the Evinrude/johnson parts and see what the cost will be, I'm sure it will be cost prohibitive.

Thanks Fellas.

You push the 6m6 Yamaha PWC (Superjet, VXR, etc.) twin to 750cc, or you push the Yamaha 50hp outboard to 750cc?

I'd love to modify the 50hp triple Yamaha outboard I have.

If the EPA is going to come after you for upgrading your outboard, there would be a bevy of motorcycle message boards cringing behind desks. Every vehicle on the road is modified one way or another.
