Basically, you will remove the air silencer and starter to gain access to the VRO pump. Then remove VRO pump wiring and fuel lines to it. Remove pulse limiter from the crankcase and replace with brass nipple. Hook up pulse fitting on the new pump to the brass nipple. Hook up incoming fuel line to pump inlet. Hook up the fuel line to the carbs. You will need to make a small mounting bracket for the new pump. I just used a piece of metal stock and used an existing engine bolt to mount it to. Once you get the old VRO out of there, there is tons of room to work. I used part number 438559... Looks like this:

I did it on my 1986 50 horse johnny.
For these reasons. The first generation VRO pumps were not fool proof, and replacement cost of a VRO pump is very high.
When the fuel is premixed,it is just another thing that cannot go wrong.
Having an older trolling motor that uses premix it would have increased the probability of making a mistake while hooking up fuel lines and thereby frying a much beloved little trolling engine.
The pump hookup was done pretty much like described above.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

About 6 months ago I removed my old VRO/fuel pump and replaced it with the old style. This was on a 1987 Johnson 110 though. It was very easy. Just cut the old oil tank out, removed the wiring, unplugged and removed the pump. Then I purchased one of the old style vacume fuel pumps. Simply screwed it to the block (pre-drill holes right in front starter), then re-routed my fuel lines. That was about it. Started mixing my fuel and oil 50:1 and never looked back. Runs great.

Thanks alot! Did you just reuse the fuel hoses from the VRO setup?? I note that some of these lines are pre-formed, so m not sure....

Don't quote me, but I don't believe the lines are pre-formed. They are of such high quality, compared to an auto fuel line, that they flex and hold in tight places. It your old lines aren't cracked anywhere, put'em back on if you want. I think I'd be tempted to replace them since they will be off anyway.
Excellent thread. My '89 60 has the VRO2. Real nice gizmo if it never screws up. I've been wrestling for awhile on whether or not to yank it. This gives me everything I need to make it so. KR

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

Can you explain what I need to do to provide the vacuum signal to the regular fuel pump (NONVRO)??

Also, rather than making a bracket for the new pump, can I purchase the bracket that was used on NONVRO motors??

In the photo below, the yellow circle is where the original pulse fitting (Vacuum signal) was. I removed that and went to Home Depot and picked up a new brass 3/8" hose barb. The hose from it connects to the bottom of the pump where the red circle is. I used 3/8" tubing for it. As for the bracket, I don't know about an original one. The pumps are so light they almost stay there by themselves with the hoses connected. Very simple to use a small piece of metal stock to hold it. You can get one of those real small L brackets at the hardware store for about .50 and use that..

Thanks. Did you purchase fuel lines from the dealer, reuse the VRO lines, or get hose elsewhere?

Actually I bought the 3/8" line from NAPA auto parts. It heavy fuel line and it works well...

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

I ordered the parts from Bill Kelley.

Whats the harm in leaving the pulse limiter on the motor with the standard fuel pump??

In-line Fuel Filter

In-line Fuel Filter

Im working on this conversion and want to make everything as close to the OEM setup as possible.

In searching the parts catalog online, it seems that there is no in-line filter on the nonvro fuel pump hose setup, while the VRO setup has the separate in-line filter. Is this correct??

Also, the catalog shows the most of the fuel lines are pre-formed lines, and not simply straight lengths of 5/16" line. Do I need to order these preformed lines or can I just use 5/16" line cut to the correct length??

Thanks

Re: In-line Fuel Filter

I would continue to use the filter and use 5/16" fuel line. It is not nessesary to use the preformed ones...
