Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

Bill Kelly at maxrules.com has the rebuild kits for the gasoline side of the VRO & OMS pumps. They are actually two kits sold as one. The oil side and electronics for the alarm system cannot be rebuilt, but it doesn't matter if you pump premix only.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

hey guys i have purchased the 438556 replacement as recommended by my supplier. I have not taken off the old VRO yet. The old pump looks as if it has 3 hose connections but my new pump has only two and an opening on the back that looks as if it should be bolted to a gasket on the engine block. My engine is a 1991 90hp evinrude ve90tleie. Do I have the wrong pump or is there a place to bolt to the engine. I assume this opening on the back is for the pulse generator and the two hose connections are fuel in and out. I would appreciate any help as I would like to tackle this job befor the weekend

Hello folks, I have the same issues as SSMAC above...

I was wondering if I could tap out a hole on the mounting bracket that I'll be making to screw in a threaded nipple for the pulse hose? I'll use tephlon tape to make sure it's airtight.

Does this make sense? Or should I just return the sierra part# 18-7352 and get the sierra pump 18-7353 that has 3 hose connections already on it...

What do you think? Thanks.

Pump # 0438559 from BRP is a good one ( 3 nipples ). I have a 99 JOhnson 60hp,3 cyl. I removed the VRO but kept the VRO bracket. I cut a flat piece of sheetmetal and laminated it to the VRO bracket and mounted the new pump to that flat surface. You can keep the pulse limiter. Just use 5/16 fuel line from NAPA and tie wraps at each connection. It's amazing how much better that little simple fuel pump works than the VRO did ( had been using the fuel side of VRO for years until it recently died ). It tells me that a VRO is not that great of a fuel pump to begin with and is way to complex if you're not utilizing the oil side. I can post a picture of this in the future if needed.

A picture or two would be great, I have an '88 60hp 3 cyl and have simply closed off the oil side, so I am also using the VRO pump for strictly fuel. May do this just to save a possible headache in the future.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

I finished working on the boat last night and now it idles real nice (maybe better than before). We'll see how it does on the water tonight.

Here's a quick narrative:

I made a mounting bracket out of aluminum plate. Because my new fuel pump only had two fittings (fuel in, fuel out) I had to fab out a mount for the pulser vacuum. In between the pumps 2 mounting screws there is a hole for the vacuum. I drilled and tapped a hole in the mounting plate and fitted this with a brass fitting. The fitting was threaded on one side (1/8") and then a 90 degree turn, and then had a hose fitting for 5/16" hose. I screwed this in completely making sure I was happy with the angle of the hose fitting and then cut off the excess threads. I then ground down the surface (for the pump gasket) to make sure it was perfectly flush. Also used tephlon tape to make sure there wasn't any leaks.

Seemed to work good, we'll see tonight!!
