2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

I know this was discussed in another thread, but that was for a 2002 model. Mine is brand new and has 12-hrs on it. Does anyone know if this has been going on for years or is it intermittent? The specs say my motor should turn over 6000 RPM. The dealer acts like he has never seen anything like this, but I'm starting to have my doubts. Either the motor has internal problems or the dealer installed the wrong prop or they rigged the throttle incorrectly.

i bought an 2006 115 merc last year. it runs about 5800RPM. the 2007 model is a new engine based after the Verado. (thats why i bought the '06 model) i would call Mercury @ 920-929-5040. they have always been easy to contact and have always answered my questions. good luck and let us know how you make out.

Have your dealer call the factory and get a fix if he is incapable or unable to fix it. If your dealer doesn't want to help, then call the Merc number yourself, be nice and explain the situation and ask for reference to a different dealer in your area. That will get thier attention. That is why you have a waranty, do not mess with it yourself.

Re: 2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

Thanks for the replies. My dealer asked me to check the setting on the tach, which I did and it is where they say it should be. Since my dealer is 80miles from the lake they delivered it to, I'm using an authorized Merc dealer on that lake to check it out. They took it out of the lake today. I'm hoping it's a minor problem. I'm not sure about the Verado...I do know it has a Yamaha head.

If its an 2007, its made by Mercury. 2006 model was the last year that the Yamaha head was used. The 2007 115 does not have a Yamaha head, thats why i stayed away from the new model.

Tell us the prop type and pitch on it right now.

I remember reading that someone took the same "issue" to the mech and he hit the fuel rail to clear something up. Injuctor?

Re: 2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

Thanks again fellas. I'll have to plea ignorance on the prop pitch. I know it's a standard prop and not SS. Two people have looked at it from the dock and said it looked right and not overly aggressive in pitch. It was taken out of the water yesterday by a dealer that is on our lake. Since they are not the original dealer, who is 80 miles away, I hope I'll get a good diagnosis and not some BS from a guy playing CYA.

I'm still going to incur some out of pocket expense since I don't have a trailer and had to rely on an outside dealer to trailer it off the lake . If it was improperly rigged, I'm really going to get hit. I'll definitely appeal to the original dealer for a full reimbursement of expenses if it is due to an improperly connected throttle.

REPAIRED!!! It was the wrong prop. I hope I haven't damaged the motor. It now turns 5800 RPM (lake is approx 2000 ASL). I'm definitely going to take this up with my dealer.

Called my dealer and they will reimburse me for the prop. All is right with the world.

Let this be a lesson to owners and potential owners of these late model Merc 115's (both the YamaMerc and new Verado-based). These engines have relatively high forward gears and require fairly low pitched props to get the engine up around 6,000rpm's. Depending on the actual hull its attached too and generally speaking, 17P is about the highest pitch these engines will twist.

This one is attached to a 24' pontoon. The new prop is now an 11, the previous was 13. It now moves on up to around 5800RPM. Our lake is approx 2000 ASL, so that sucks up a little HP.

You did not gain 1800 RPM's from a 2" pitch prop change. The dealer did something else to correct the problem....

Well, all I can say is, I took it to a different dealer and not the one I bought if from. They told me they only changed the prop and they only charged me for the prop. I can't imagine a dealer who is not associated with the selling dealer doing anything without charging me. All I know is it's absolutely a different boat now and the RPM increase is not imaginary...nor is the extra top end speed. I know I'm now satisfied.

Re: 2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

I'm having a similar problem, but my 2006 model Merc 115 hp 4-stroke tops out at 5000, when Merc says it should be around 5800-6000. It's on a 22ft. pontoon, full furniture. Came with a 13P-14D prop. The bad thing is, top speed at WOT is only 18 MPH on the GPS. The boat manufacturer and everyone else is saying it should top out between 26 and 30 MPH. I get blowout over 1/4 trim. It's been 11 weeks and the dealer is simply incapable of figuring it out.

On top of it, we bought this rig new 11 weeks ago. The sales order says its a 2007 model motor. I came to find out it's a 2006 model built in Nov. 05. Do you think I'm mad?? Merc. went to "no model year desination" in 2006, after mine was built. Merc verifies that it is a 2006 model year.

I'm meeting with the owner of the dealership on Monday to work this out. I'm insisting on a new motor (even though mine is a Yamaha built Merc). I've heard good things about the Verado.

Let us know how it turns out. That boat should definitely top out at 25mph+ Mine says it's a 2007 and the salesman told me it had a Yamaha head. Maybe mine was actually built in 2006...??

Re: 2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

If your engine looks like this, then it's a 2007 model. The 2007 models are all Merc. powerheads. And limulus, I realize you took it to the dealer and they fixed it, which is great news. But I wanted you to know that it's impossible for any pitch prop to change RPM's so drastically. Normally, you will get about 200 RPM's per one inch pitch change. This is just information for you to know for future use...

No, it has the older style. But it's the one still shown on the Mercury website for the 115 HP 4-stroke. Made by Yamaha - what's up with that story?

And yours doesn't have a "year model". Manufactured date only, due to their "model year elimination" program. That program allows the dealers to control their inventory and screw customers by selling old stock.

ETex2,
Do you know what the serial number cutoff is for 2006 vs 2007 builds?

Rick,
Maybe, Merc knows there is a problem with some of the engines and they have instructed dealers to repair the problem? BTW, what prop are you running and is that a pontoon?

Re: 2007 115hp 4-Stroke Won't Rev over 4000RPM

ETex2, You have a great motor with descent power but it?s pushing a heavy, inefficient boat. I have no idea why Mercury has always equipped the 4-stroke 115 with 2:07-1 gearing. It needs the lower 2:33-1 gearing of the 90 4-strokes. Stiletto makes a Bay Pro I 4-blade stainless prop in both 13P and 15P. I would be willing to bet the 13P would be the ticket for you. Whatever you do, forget about running any aluminum prop with your rig if you want the best performance given it?s pushing a Pontoon.
