85 hp no spark

Today I picked up an 85 hp evindrude with working tilt and trim along with a boat for $200. I just stumbled upon it while looking at the classifieds. I have a 1973 135 hp evinrude and I would swear the motors are twins looking at all the parts and design. I'm not sure what year my new 85 hp is but it seems to have no spark although it does crank over well.

I checked compression and I have 120 psi on all cylinders this is the first reason I bought it because my 135 horse has bad compression and I figured there would be lots of interchangeable parts if the ones on the 85 hp were bad.

I did at one point see a couple of small sparks from one plug while testing with a screwdriver in the boot and holding it close to the block. but they went away and never came back.

Any advice where to start?

The model is 85393M I'm not sure wich one I should use for parts granted it would be nicer to have the 135 but I'm not so sure the tilt and trim would work from the 85hp plus the compression is shot on the 135hp got two pistons at 90 psi one around 45 and another around 20.

That [edit 85393] is a 1973 model number, so you should be in good shape except for engine size. Everything else will cross.

Re: 85 hp no spark

if i were you i would try to fix the 85 because the compressing can be tricky and the ignition parts are the same.

Re: 85 hp no spark

So now that we have established that the motors are virtually identicle other then some slight varriances and piston size, back to my original problem being no spark.

Any Suggestions?

I have an 85 as well with a kill switch. Unsure if this is your problem but as you probably know it won't start if the clip is out. I didn't realize my clip was out once and tried and tried to start it and almost took it to the mechanic. Just a thought.:p

Thats an interesting thought seeing as I don't know the boat or motor yet it is a possibility but as of yet I have not seen anything that resembles a kill switch. There is just one toggle switch that I can see just beneath the ignition key which is for the electric choke! I would assume it would be near the ignition or dash somewhere if it existed I will have to check. It just seems strange to me that all 4 coils are not producing any spark at all!

Re: 85 hp no spark

I have lots of post from last week troubleshooting a no spark condition. Search "77Lark" in the advanced search or something and you should get a boatload (no pun intended) of info. Mine was the power pack. It did cough and sputter for me two or three times and die so maybe...

If you have a big red plug by your motor you can unplug that, take a small jumper wire from the positive post, which is the one with the smaller red wire(s) on your starter solenoid and hold that to the other post on your solenoid NOT the ground post the other small one. Might pull all the plug wires to keep her from staring but if she does you can will it with manual choke.

Check the little fuse is applicable in the motor compartment. Not just the fuse but the fuse holder as well. Make sure power goes in and then out.

Someone sprayed the wd-40 in their big red plug and it "fired right up" But mine was as clean as could be.

I don't know anything about your boat and very little about mine but thats where I started. Listen to these guys on here, there very bright. And follow the links to troubleshooting guides. Those helped me.

Edit: I don't think speedboater was hustlin' He just got a little excited. Don't wanna scare people away from here though.

Re: 85 hp no spark

I have the same engine, almost 2 weeks ago it lost all spark, I disconnected the yellow black wire from the power pack and cranked it over and still no spark, so that ruled out the ignition switch, I then as I was told a 99% chance it is the power pack, I called Napa ordered a power pack and wham she fired right up. By the way NAPA is about 50% cheaper on parts than any of the marina's called. The power pack is an easy change, it is right on the back of the block with about 12 wires coming out of it, remove the cover and mark the wires that aren't marked and proceed to swapping it out about a 15 minute job.

Re: 85 hp no spark

on my 135 i lost spark on all 4 cylinders and it turned out to be the stator.
Since your problem is on all four i stronngly suggest that you pop the flywheel off.

Under the flywheel there should be 2 big coils along with 8 small ones. Check to see if the big coils are cracked or swollen.

If they check out good then its probably your power pack.
you can't really test the power pack so post with the results and i ll help you further.

Re: 85 hp no spark

I changed the rectifier and power pack with known working ones from my 135. At first no difference but then out of the blue it started to fire. Now it will not stay running. It will fire up for a second or two and die. I checked while cranking over the engine for spark and it seems to be intermitent.
