Water Shutter fallen into Y pipe

I have a 1978 Sea Ray 220 Overnighter with a 2002 260 Hp Mercruiser (GM 350). Unfortunately the previous owner has no idea what maintenance was and even though the motor had very low hours on it, it needed a lot of work. After tuning it up I took it out for its second shakedown run and it overheated when at full throttle. I decided to clean out the exhaust risers, replace the impeller, and all the bellows. I found out it also had a blown head gasket on one side of the motor so I also replaced that. It is nearly ready to go in the water and while removing the right side exhaust riser and rubber connectors the worn exhaust shutter fell down into the y pipe. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it without removing the engine?

Welcome to iboats.......:)
A long thin piece of metal with duct tape or pull the drive & run a hose into the y pipe & it should flush it out the back through the bellows.....:)

So pulling the lower unit and flushing some water through it should get it out the exhaust bellows? I will try the tape first. I take it these are not metallic as I tried a telescoping magnetic retrieval tool.

Yeah, that won't work......
Make sure the tape is well secured to the wire....;)

I just fixed one of those last week. Take off the risers and use one of those grapples that are flexible that you push with your thumb to open it. It is easier to take off the lower unit and push the flap back into the down tube (it makes it easier to grab). Good luck.
