Hello, just wondering if anyone has had the same thing as me,I am having a chirpping noise similar to a belt noise only under load or if you give it a quick rev.I changed the belts ,no help, changed the manifold gasket,it was leaking some and I resufaced the manifold as well to clean it up.I ran it without any belts on it for a few seconds,no difference, changed the timing slightly,no improvement ,premium gas in it too.Last thing I did was pull off each plug wire and start it ,it doesn't do it with the #1 off but will with each of the others off,so this is telling me that #1 cylinder is the problem, right??Now what is the problem ,maybe a bad lifter or weak lifter?I haven't checked the compression yet but it does run great only has 300hrs on it,it's an 89.Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

took the valve cover off today, everything looks to be ok,rockers tight ,no broken valve springs, could this be a bad valve?

IMHO: It's time to buy, rent, or borrow a compression tester.

I f you still have the valve cover off, try to spray a little oil on the rockers while running. If this helps you are not getting enough oil to the rockers to keep them lubed . My B inlaws Jeep just did this "chirping" bit.

going to check compression today, when I had the valve cover off and running there seemed to be lots of oil getting up,even at an idle.

I checked the compression 140lbs on 1,2,3 clyinder and 120lbs on 4 put some oil in and got 140lbs,would this be enough to make a noise, next question if it is a broken ring or worn can the engine be reringed in the boat ,there seems to be lots of clearance to drop the oil pan.

Pistons come out through the top of the motor, you will have to pull the intake and heads to get the piston out, and pull the oil pan to knock the piston through the cylinder. If your going to rering I would replace the bearing while its open.

Sounds like a valve issue, might be a cracked or broken intake valve, letting combustion squeak through when firing.

Yes I know how the pistons come out, just wasn't sure if it is possible to do in the boat without taking out the engine, not really into that.

While I don't know what your chirping noise is, I would add that removing the enigne and doing whatever repair is necessary would be far easier that trying it in the boat. It's not hard to remove - even if you've never done it before.

Hold the phone.......don't pull that engine yet!!!!! You don't even know what the problem is. Did you check the rocker arms? Find any that were loose? You could be having a lifter issue too, I don't remember if you can check Chevy lifters or not. I would pull the lifter cover and run the engine and use a piece of hose to listen if one is making noise, if so, replace. Since you have the valve cover off you might want to check to see if the valves are loose in the guides too, try to shake them back and forth. Also, if you find the rocker arms too loose you may as well back the adjusting off and readjust them using the method OMC uses.

I'm not going to rush into this and pull the motor yet, want to make sure what the problem really is first. There is only 300hrs on it so I have a hard time believeing that something real serious is wrong ,hopefully its only a bad lifter or something simple like that.Almost sounds like pinging too ,had a chev truck that always pinged under load.I have been using premium gas but there is still some of last years gas in it.I am going to try running it off another tank of fresh gas also
