I bought a boat from my dad. I'm not sure what year the engine is, but its a big Mercury 650 thunderbolt (he says) I don't have a picture of it right now or a serial number, but it is older looking. I would guess 60's or 70's?
He had the entire thing rebuilt two years ago, top to bottom he says. In those two years it has spent 99.9% of its time on the trailer in the garage.
I take the boat out yesterday, plug in the fuel line after i charge up the battery, pump the primer bulb a couple times and go to start the engine. it cranks, nothing happens. i crank maybe 5-10 seconds at a time, stop, let it sit, and try again maybe 30 seconds to a minute later. I do this probably 15 times before going to double check the fuel. I pull the fuel tank out (right by the battery wire sheath, and i feel that the negative battery terminal is hot. fuel isn't the problem, push tank back under shelf and let it sit to cool down. 10 minutes later, turn the key, nothing happens. Not even a click when I hit the choke. Nothing.
Put it back on the trailer, take it home. about halfway home I hit the starter and i hear a click, and it sounds like the choke kicked on this time. nothing else happens. and it only will click for me one time, and then the whole thing goes dead again.
I was told to shoot some ether inside the carb before starting to assist with the vacuum, but i thought that was a bad idea as it is a two stroke. I work on cars and trucks, antique tractors, things like that, but never have played with a marine motor before.
my guess is that i either burned up the starter or i have a fuse somewhere or a relay somewhere that popped when the cable got hot or when I moved something. how do i trouble shoot this?
