Mercury 650 question, I'm new to boating, and I searched..

I bought a boat from my dad. I'm not sure what year the engine is, but its a big Mercury 650 thunderbolt (he says) I don't have a picture of it right now or a serial number, but it is older looking. I would guess 60's or 70's?

He had the entire thing rebuilt two years ago, top to bottom he says. In those two years it has spent 99.9% of its time on the trailer in the garage.

I take the boat out yesterday, plug in the fuel line after i charge up the battery, pump the primer bulb a couple times and go to start the engine. it cranks, nothing happens. i crank maybe 5-10 seconds at a time, stop, let it sit, and try again maybe 30 seconds to a minute later. I do this probably 15 times before going to double check the fuel. I pull the fuel tank out (right by the battery wire sheath, and i feel that the negative battery terminal is hot. fuel isn't the problem, push tank back under shelf and let it sit to cool down. 10 minutes later, turn the key, nothing happens. Not even a click when I hit the choke. Nothing.

Put it back on the trailer, take it home. about halfway home I hit the starter and i hear a click, and it sounds like the choke kicked on this time. nothing else happens. and it only will click for me one time, and then the whole thing goes dead again.

I was told to shoot some ether inside the carb before starting to assist with the vacuum, but i thought that was a bad idea as it is a two stroke. I work on cars and trucks, antique tractors, things like that, but never have played with a marine motor before.

my guess is that i either burned up the starter or i have a fuse somewhere or a relay somewhere that popped when the cable got hot or when I moved something. how do i trouble shoot this?

Nick, First post the serial number, so we know what you have. Itwill help tremendously in troubleshooting.

Second, you can check the condition of the starter by jumping it from a known good battery, using jumper cables. The starter may have a ground cable, which is as important as the plus cable, so connect both cables directly to the starter. if it cranks, you know it has a bad starter solenoid, bad battery cables or something else in the start circuit.

Now troubleshoot the choke sloenoid. next troubleshoot the ignition.

Nick, if you need to prime a 2 cycle engine never use starter fluid, if will trash the engine just take some fuel and put it in a squirt can and prime the engine with that, the starter fluid has no lubrication in it and can break rings

I'm at work now, but I will post the serial number as soon as I get done for the day.

I've never tried jumping the starter, i just hook up the cables off my truck, for example, and plug them on to the posts on the starter? I'm assuming even if the poles are reversed it will spin, just maybe in the wrong direction? does that matter or is there a certain way to hook them up?

I've only seen the starter once when I had the cover off, for about 2 minutes. so its a little foggy in my mind. better when i see it tonight.

Nick, You need to jump the starter with the correct polarity, otherwise you may mess up your electronics.

The starter may have a ground cable from the body of the starter to the block or casing. It will have a Pos connection, usually at the bottom of the starter. Now jump it pos to pos and neg to neg. If it doesn't have a ground cable, connect the neg jumper cable to the starter mounting bolt.

If it sat for two years you probably have a bad connection on the cables. Clean cables and check battery charge. Sounds like the polarity is correct because the choke selenoid works.

The serial number is 2017472.

I got the engine to run. So thats good news, put a new battery in it, tested for spark and found that it wasn't pulling fuel due to a bad connection. so i changed tanks, replaced the connection, turned the key and it fired right up.

now the problem i have is its not sucking up any water to cool it down. my dad said that there should be a stream of water flowing down out of the block on the left hand side (as you are looking at the engine). its not doing anything. i had started the engine in a large garbage can (new and clean) put the water level in the can wasn't as high as the water line i can see on the boat. i had the ports covered with water that i was told need to be covered.

It ran for maybe a grand total of 30 seconds (6 different times maybe?) and it didn't get hot any of the times. the water was bubbling pretty hard right above the prop, exhaust coming out of two exhaust ports on the lower half of the negine, no stream of water whatsoever. I'm told this is very important.

What do i do?

First you can try to use compressed air to blow out anythign that may be in the line. IF that fails you may have something really clogging up the cooling line. If you can get air to flow through it may be that you need to repalce the impeller on the water pump. There are a lot or articles on here about doing so. Good luck!

On a motor that has sat it is strongly recommended that you replace the water pump impeller, a $15-$20 part. You will need a manual for this job. However, the lack of a stream of water may be just a clogged "telltale" or "pee-hole" which can be cleared with a wire or piece of string-trimmer string. Don't run it without water circulating. You can feel the exhaust port cover on the port side of the motor. If it stays cool, there is water circulating. If it gets hot, shut down fast.

Re: Mercury 650 question, I'm new to boating, and I searched..

I am planning on replacing the impeller, but I'm not sure what year the motor is, and the database that i found online for mercury said i didn't have a valid serial number. I double checked it, and what i entered was correct. Anybody know what year that thing is?

Also, what part do I need? I'm sorry to be a pain, i'm looking for something clear, like a link to what I need so i can get it overnighted and fixed before the weekend hits. Thanks again.

Thats not good. Its definately a 2 stroke. Did they even make a 4 stroke outboard back in '66?

It's a 1966 model 2 stroke 4 cylinder...I had a 67' model and it was a great engine. Rebuild the carbs and put a water pump kit in it, new lower unit fluid, a set of spark plugs, fresh gas/oil and it should be good to go. The one I bought sat for 12 years before I got it and ran perfect after I did all of the above...
