I have a 1992 88spl that is a cold natured beast! I use this outboard mainly in the winter and this is when it is more likely to die! I never have trouble starting it but it just has to be milked with the electric choke for a while! What can I do to help get this problem fixed? thanks

the carbs have never been touched , I start by pumping the bulb to get pressure then I push the electric choke on the key switch and hold it in while turning over the motor till it cranks! thats it:D

What do you think about using sea foam in my gas to clear it up? I have no running problem only cold natured in the winter. thanks:D

pump bulb till hard, turn key to on, push in for 8 count then turn key to start. those are the directions in the manual for the 88 spl. then you may have to bump the key once or twice till it settles down.

well thanks that is pretty much what I have been doing except for the 8 count I just held it in till it cranks then milk it! Do you think the sea foam would help ?

Not to answer the seafoam question - but you might find the long priming before start helps a lot. I know it did with my old V6 which was hard to start and keep running before I figured that out.

My 88 spl took about 20-40 pumps to start when cold. Then you hold the choke in until it can idle on its own.

Re: cold natured 88spl

1st the 92 does not have a choke, it has a primer solenoid, that lets fuel flow in the the directly in to intake, it is the hose on top of the carbs close to the intake. pumping the bulb only pumps the fuel to the fuel pump, and carbs, and pressurizes the fuel system. the 8 count allows enough of the pressurized fuel to inter the intake to start the motor. hold the key till it starts will very possible flood it. as long as you hold that key in the is fuel flowing directly into the intake.

Re: cold natured 88spl

the motor developes 90 hp at 5000 rpms, 5500 tops is recommended. i had an '88 88spl one of the best motors i ever had. just sold it with a boat that went to south america. never spent a cent on repairs. just normal maintainance.

Did they put the Quickstart system on in 1992? I'm not sure if it was around then, if not are you using the fast idle lever at all when cold starting, to advance the timing?

I am using the advance lever. I don't know of any quick start device , I bought this last year. Looks like it has very few hours on it.
