9/11 Memorial Commemorations drop off on 6th year...

I heard on the radio this morning that as little as 6% of Americans will attend or observe a commemoration tomorrow.

My first response was that 9/11 should be made a Federal Holiday to remind the country that we are the target of many hateful peoples.

But then I began to compare the 9/11 event to the First and Second World Wars and wondered if it was a significant enough event to get a holiday like Memorial day.

After thinking about this for a few hours while stuck in a huge traffic jam, I decided that 9/11 events were worthy of a Federal Holiday to commemorate and memorialize the attack on this country and the resulting loss of innocent lives.

Your thoughts?

I'm with you Mark! Memorial Day is for remembering those who sacrificed their lives for us. We need a "Don't Forget, There Are People Who Want to Kill Us" Day. I think that IS forgotten. And quickly. We remember Pearl Harbor because it was this big major attack, and we remember 9/11 because of the towers and victims etc. :( However, I do think we forget why these things happen: Bad people who do really bad stuff, AKA Evil (shhhhhhhh, some people get really freaked out when we utter that evil word). We should never forget that there are "bad people who do really bad stuff", or somebody will convince us that we don't need a military, we don't need a CIA, we don't need prisons, we don't need the death penalty, we don't need surveillance, we don't need guns, we don't need stealth stuff, we don't need war . . . Until there are no more "Really bad people who do really bad stuff", I want to keep reminding ourselves that there are ;)

People want to forget.
Don't get me started.
Ironic it's on a Tuesday again this year like it was that tragic day in 2001.
I for one will never forget.:mad:

With the price of gas and every thing else going up I figure most people just can't make the trip no matter how much they would like to. I know we can't afford it but would be there if we could. May be each town should have a 9/11 day just to remind us of the things stated above...ANIMAL :D

My first thought is how absurd such predictions of the observance are!! Who does that clown on the radio think he is? Nostradomus?!?!

Second thought is, Perhaps Rosie o'donel, sean penn, or Paris hilton will -- But I'll never forget. I think 9/11 is another date which will live in infamy. If n ot for the general populus, at least for all patriots, along with Christians and Jews, whether patriotic or not.

.

It was not a prediction, it was the result of a poll. In addition, various towns in the area were contacted, and many towns indicated that there was not going to be a memorial service this year or the memorial services were geatly reduced in scope. One town said their observance plan is a minute of silence at the town meeting that evening.

That is somewhat odd, I would have thought a least a minute of silence and remembrance for all.
If there isn't anything official seemingly planned...it might be surprising the turn-out and support the day will bring at ground zero and maybe a few other places. You might be surprised (in a good way).

I can and do my thoughts and prays every year

If you live in NY there is daily FIGHT about the trade center and how it should be rebuilt and it has really worn people OUT :(

And sadly as with most days of remembrance how long would it take to just be another Memorial Day sale
