in the early stages of repairing the engine described above and noticed a single wire coming out of the wiring harness and headed towards the magneto housing (belt driven). after finding a fuzzy picture in my seloc book it appears to be for a starter safety switch that is missing. can't seem to locate one in my quick search thus far. anyone have a picture of this part (preferably installed on the motor) and know where i might be able to pick one up? i'll try and post a few pics of my engine later.

Das, On my '59 Fat-Fifty, there is a black ignition killer wire, which attaches to the distributor housing where the points wire connects. This is on the port side of the motor. On the starboard side of the distributor, there is a safety switch which does not allow power to the starter solenoid, if the motor is in gear.

that's the part that i need exactly. the other thing i just noticed, look in this picture, in the red rectangle there is a wire connecting what i think is a shift linkage to the distributor up to a small part on the lift plate above the flywheel.

That is a recoil starter lockout. Prevents you from pulling the rope when the motor is in gear. Doing that stunt will pitch you out over the stern when it starts and takes off out from under you.

Do you need anything else? It's so warm here and I need an excuse to go out to the boat.

Re: mid 60's Johnson 75 hp V4

one more silly question. on this engine, where are the coils located? when i got it the previous owner said he thought the coil was bad, can't seem to locate though. i've also got a few wires coming from the wiring harness that have been sealed on the end (fourth pic i'm holding the wires out), what might these have come from. and finally in the third picture if you follow the vertical throttle linkage rod down from where it goes up towards the carbs and down towards where the cable connects, on the front side there is what appears similar to a gas line with a plug in the end. is this normal? anything else look funny on the engine

The coil is in the distributor magneto (see photo). The blue and yellow wires are for the optional generator that mounts opposite the starter. I see your white wire for the safety switch hanging over the distributor advance bar. I don't know what that rubber line is for. The fuel pump need crankcase vacuum so there should be a line from the fuel pump (where the glass bowl is located) to the crankcase. I see another line from the choke that empties out the back engine cover on the starter side. Mine doesn't have that.
If you give me the model number off the transom mount or a welch plug on the power head I can tell you the year. That'll help identify parts at the shop.

Ah-ha, you have a water heated choke, mine is hot air. That's the tube from the choke out the back. I see the other line from cylinder #3. Mine has a plug in the side of Cyl #3 and a rusty metal tube from the exhaust to the choke.
You'll be well advised to take the bottom end off and replace the water pump before starting this engine, especially if you don't know the history of the motor. The impellors are rubber and many a boater have had them disintegrate and lodge inside the water jacket of the engine, not to mention overheat the engine. The paint looks good on your motor so it probably hasn't overheated recently.
Don't go yankin' on those spark plug wires. They're not like car wires. They have threaded fittings on the ends and have to be twisted out. If you don't have a problem with them, leave them alone.
Last but not least, read this thread by JB.

great info. thanks. the numbers that i pulled off the transom mount are
v4sl 13 c and 2232470. i've got a seloc manual for johnson ob's 60-65 i think. probably would be wise to get a more specific manual, yes?

Das, I think your cylinders are marked incorrectly. Normally cylinders 1 and 3 are on one side of the motor and 2 and 4 on the other cylinder bank. The numbers may be cast into the block as well.

Correct..Did you just mark the wires for reference before you pulled them?

they are marked that way (blue tape) strictly for my reference in the event i pulled the wires, which i have not yet. but i'll remark if i can find the #'s cast into the block.

Re: mid 60's Johnson 75 hp V4

Somebody has modified the water hose routing from the automatic choke. There is supposed to be a hose going from the choke to where the plugged hose is in your picture. They have re-routed that hose to provide a tell-tale stream (1st picture) so they could see the water pump operation better.

I don't have any problem with that, just so you know what you have.

FR, does that mean I could take the plug out of mine and install a line routed out through the bottom engine cover for a tell-tale stream?

alright, it's warming up so i'm thinking of getting this motor running. anyone have a good source for the parts mentioned above (ignition coil, safety switch). checked on here, but they only went back as far as the 70's.

Cylinders on these motors are always numbered from top to bottom. Right (Starboard) top being number 1. Left (Port) bottom = 4.
