I was at the lake and my batteries went dead the engine ran fine until I killed it. I got back and recharged all batteries and then when I went to turn the engine over it would not turn over. So I checked fuses. I found one fuse burnt so I replaced it. starter then spun but would not pop up. What could be the cause besides the fact that the starter could be bad. Is there anouther fuse or a short I missed.

Still low battery(s) and/or poor electrical connection somewhere, take every battery cable OFF, one at a time, clean/sand each terminal/contact point, BOTH ENDS, battery, starter and relay.

Try again and repost, almost ready to bet that'll fix it!

I know this sounds stupid, but make sure you have the right cables hooked up to the right locations on the battery. Poss. - poss. Negg. - Negg. Sounds dumb, but i did this one time, and the starter will spin but not pop up.

The preceding excellent suggestions should help you solve your problem. If they do not and you need to troubleshoot some more, the attached starter troubleshooting guide may be of help to you. The wiring diagram may not exactly match your setup but the general principles would apply.

Good luck

Put a couple drops of oil on the pinion gear shaft. Sometimes they stick and will operate just as yours is doing. Could just be a coincidence, but worth a try...

Plus ya toast the switchbox, expensive, and the last thing now would be a starter..

Now it's MY problem. And dummy me, I connected the positive cable to the negative side of the battery. Yeah, the wire was BLACK, but in my "wisdom", I saw the red collar at the end as a form of stress reliever. Not so! After screwing up, I finally read the tag on the cable . . . . dang! dang! dang!

So, starter does not enage. I've removed it and jumped it with a known quality battery -- only to see it spin intermittently (after taping it on the driveway), and never popping up.

So, bad starter. Now, what's this about "toasting the switch box". Any info on this would be really appreciated.

Oh yeah, never did find a blown fuse anywhere - - thought I would.

Motor is a 2005 Merc 2 stroke, 25 hp.

Thanks for any info that might come from this query.

If this engine has a rectifier you had better check it too. Putting on the cables wrong will smoke it too.

Rectifier will keep the motor charging the battery correct? What will the switchbox do? Because i also accidently connected the poss. to neg, and vice versa and was wondering why the starter wouldnt engage. I swapped terminals and it worked fine. So im guessing I also should replace these things? Maybe thats why my motor is acting funny in the 1st place. Its a 1988 150 black max.
